The Special Olympics in China Daily reported.

News from the China Journal.

200712 October

China, president and Hu Jintao announced the opening of the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games at the opening ceremony in Shanghai on Tuesday.

A record 729 1 athletes from 164 countries and regions will take part in the 2 10/sports meeting to be held in Shanghai on10/,ranging in age from 69 to 8.

This is the first time that the Asian Games has been held in Asia, and it has also welcomed 2,302 coaches, more than 20,000 families of mentally retarded athletes, celebrities, VIPs and about 40,000 volunteers from all over the world.

The three-hour opening ceremony was visually eye-catching with dazzling lights, fireworks, costumes and overwhelming music.

This grand ceremony was attended by 5,800 actors, and started with a drum performance called "Harmony: Heart to Heart", which was performed by mentally retarded actors.

Liu Tong, music director, revealed before the opening ceremony: "Each drum makes a unique sound independently, but each individual sound is combined to form a unified single chord, which expresses the harmonious spirit and national spirit of the Special Olympics." .

"I hope music can express the spirit of Special Olympics to the world, so that everyone will be surprised by the talent and courage of Special Olympics athletes," Liu added.

After the drum performance, the evening party was divided into four performance sessions, each of which embodied the four themes of the Special Olympics spirit, namely, courage, sharing, skill and happiness.

During the performance, some leading singers, actors and musicians from home and abroad also appeared in Shanghai Stadium, adding luster to this fascinating feast. They performed their masterpieces or interacted with athletes and spectators.

However, it was the China athletes in the parade who stole the show and won thunderous applause from 80,000 spectators.

The host country sent the largest delegation ever, consisting of 1, 274 athletes, and participated in 2 1 official events and 4 performance events, namely cricket, dragon boat, dragon and lion dance and motor sports training events.

More than one third of the athletes from 3/kloc-0 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in China are from Shanghai.

The standard for Special Olympics athletes is to be at least eight years old, with IQ below 70, and to participate in some sports activities for at least eight weeks every year.

Since 1987, China has been sending delegations to participate in the Summer and Winter Special Olympics World Games. Every competition, the number of China delegation is increasing.

In order to help all people with mental retardation integrate into society, the 10 Day Games will also hold activities such as the Global Health and Welfare Summit for People with Mental Retardation, the Global Youth Summit (attended by young people with mental retardation and ordinary youth) and the Global Family Forum.

Even before the Olympic Games kicked off, the athletes took part in the activities of the host city when they arrived in China. In this project, many athletes and their families have the opportunity to stay with China's family in 12 cities, including Shanghai, Xi 'an and Dalian.

According to the data of China Disabled Persons' Federation, there are about120,000 people with intellectual disabilities in China. There are1700,000 in the world, accounting for 3% of the world population.
