Tim Richter and his wife Linda, near Buffalo, new york, have been teaching books for more than 30 years-he teaches computers and she is engaged in special education (for mentally retarded, disabled or gifted children). "Teaching is everything to us," Tim would describe it like this. 1April, 998, he learned that he needed heart surgery. It was this that began to make him think about the meaning of life.
Shortly after the operation, Tim saw a pamphlet introducing the Fantasy Library, which was founded by the dolly parton Foundation and mailed a book to the newborn to five-year-old children in Seville County, Tennessee, the singer's hometown every month. "I think Linda and I can do something similar after retirement," Tim recalled. He put the pamphlet on the table as a reminder.
Five years later, retired Tim clicked on "Fantasy Library". The brochure is still on the table. The project has been opened to couples who enjoy discounts on books and postage.
The quality of books is a priority for the Richters. Instead of registering online, they went to the Dollywood website to check it out. "We don't want to give children junk books," Linda said. These books are reviewed every year by teachers, cultural experts and members of the board of directors of Dollywood, including the ancient Roman writer ezra jack keats. There are some relatively new books in Snowy Days, such as Liama Liama Series by Anna Dudney.
To our satisfaction, the couple founded the richter Family Fund and put it into work. Since 2004, they have distributed more than 65,438+02,200 books to local communities. Megan Williams, the mother of four children, was grateful: "I have never heard of the books recommended by this project."
Richter spends about $400 a month mailing books to 200 children. "Some people are waiting to die," Tim said. "Others try to keep themselves busy for the rest of their lives."
