During the period of 1948, the situation of the war of liberation changed greatly, and the entire division and army of the Kuomintang were annihilated by the People's Liberation Army. Chiang Kai-shek had to change from strategic attack to strategic defense, and tried to collect cannon fodder by all means in an attempt to maintain his rule by relying on the "natural barrier" of the Yangtze River. On the recommendation of Wu Zhongxin, former chairman of Anhui Provincial Government, Liao and Liao were appointed. Liao served as deputy commander of the eighth appeasement area, director of Yingshang command post and temporary commander of the first column, and Liao served as deputy commander of the temporary column. Command post and temporary column command post are located in Zhengyangguan Town, Shou County, Anhui Province.
When a temporary column was stationed in Zhengyang Pass, Liao contacted Fengtai County Committee of China through Kuomintang Senator Zhang Mingcheng, and Zhang personally contacted the Sixth Division of the People's Liberation Army to report the situation of Liao Department. Brother Liao also wrote directly to Wu Yun, the deputy magistrate of Fengtai County (a classmate when he was a child), asking him to report to his superiors and send someone to contact him as soon as possible. But for a long time there was no result.
1948165438+1In mid-October, Hua Ye sent Zhu Huaiming (a pseudonym) to Shou and Feng to find a temporary column. Under the arrangement of Chang Zhiqing, the former county magistrate of Shouxian County, Zhu Huaiming and Liao met in an abandoned turret in Zhengyangguan Lycium Garden. During the meeting, Liao talked to Zhu Huaiming about his views on the situation, saying that the army uprising was inevitable and everything was subject to the arrangement of the head of the PLA. Zhu Huaiming conveyed Hua Ye's request for a temporary local uprising to support the troops crossing the river. In order to facilitate contact, Zhang Zuoliu, a senior consultant of Liao, was appointed to contact Zhu, and the contact information and location were agreed. Under the cover of Chang Chuanfu and Chang Zhiqing, Zhu Huaiming traveled back and forth between Liaobu and Hua Ye for many times. All the important military information obtained by Liao Department was given to Hua Ye by Zhu Huaiming.
In order to step up the preparations for the uprising, Liao and Zhao, Zhang Puqing, Yuan and other secret businessmen who supported the uprising repeatedly analyzed the uprising plan. Everyone agrees that the temporary column is newly compiled, with complex members, unpopular and poor equipment. After the uprising, I was worried about being besieged by the surrounding Kuomintang troops. Most leaders' families are in Nanjing, and their families may be affected after the uprising. How to deal with these problems, we hope to get instructions from the leadership of Hua Ye, so as to decide the next step. With these questions, Zhu Huaiming once again returned to Hua Ye to report and ask for instructions.
Soon after, Zhu Huaiming returned to Huainan and conveyed to Liao the instructions of Chief Hua Ye: "If the time for the uprising is not ripe, don't rush to the uprising, agree that the team will obey the Kuomintang's order to retreat across the river, but don't take the armed forces of the counties, and try to protect Huainan coal mines and power plants from damage."
Before Liao left Shouxian for the south, he met Zhu Huaiming again in the "Shuangyuan" in Tianjiaan, Huainan, telling him that the Ministry of National Defense of the National Government was very suspicious of Liao Department, and that Liao had been recalled to Nanjing and was actually a hostage (he was appointed as the deputy commander of Quzhou Editing and Training Department, but ignored it after receiving the power of attorney and took his family to relatives' home in Suzhou). Jiangbei does not have the conditions for uprising, please report to the head immediately. Zhu felt that the situation was urgent, so he rushed back to Hua Ye headquarters overnight, but when he returned to Huainan with the instructions of the head, a column had temporarily crossed the Yangtze River, and the contact between the Liao Department and our party was interrupted.
After the temporary column arrived in Wuhu, the temporary column in the eighth appeasement area and the Yingshang command post were immediately revoked, and the temporary column was changed to the temporary first division, and Liao Yun was promoted to the position of teacher.
After the troops retreated to the south of the Yangtze River, Liao lost contact with our party. Wang Bailing told the Ministry of National Defense that the temporary division is the nest of the producers of * * *; Commander-in-chief of Nanjing garrison also complained to Tang that the Liao Department smuggled communication equipment for the * * * army. In order to find the party organization as soon as possible, Liao sent Zhang Zuoliu to Shanghai to find Yu Yanong who lives in Shanghai. I introduced Zhang to Zhu Zifan, who works in the rebel army and now lives in Nanjing, and has contact with Hua Ye. Liao and Zhang Zuoliu went to Nanjing to meet Zhu Zifan.
While contacting Zhu Zifan, it was introduced that Ishihara Gao and Liao of the East China Bureau working group in Wuhu met in a private room in the bathhouse of Daguanyuan in Wuhu. There is also Zhang Puqing, the head of the three regiments and the backbone of the uprising. After research, the two sides agreed on three points: first, the Liao department should not have conflicts with guerrillas; Second, actively prepare troops to cross the river; Third, pay close attention to the movements of the Kuomintang. However, Nanjing Ministry of National Defense is not assured that this "abnormal" team is defending the "natural barrier" of the Yangtze River. In February, the Ministry of National Defense ordered the temporary 1st Division to go to Nanling and Jingxian to serve as the rear defense of Jiang Fang. At this time, there were about ten Kuomintang troops stationed in southern Anhui. Liao was surrounded by a large army and could not move easily, so he had to be ordered to retreat.
Temporary division arrived in jingxian county, hq in the city, the third regiment in Maolin. At this time, guerrillas were active in Maolin area. Therefore, the two sides agreed that the garrison would not move; The officers and men of the first division will not interfere temporarily when they go out; If both sides encounter each other, they can shoot into the air if necessary, and the first division will never attack for the time being.
At that time, the situation developed rapidly. Seeing that the "natural barrier" was not guaranteed, the Ministry of National Defense ordered the First Division to temporarily withdraw from Zhejiang to serve as the defense of Huizhou and Hangzhou.
On April 3rd, 1949, the temporary 1st Division arrived in Lin 'an, and was reorganized as 1 10 Division, belonging to the 85th Army, with Liao still as the teacher.
After the adaptation of Lin 'an, O Division continued to go south and arrived in Hangzhou in a few days. Liao sent a special car to Suzhou, took the Liao family to Hangzhou and stayed in a hotel by the lake. At that time, the million-man division of the People's Liberation Army was about to cross the river, and the Kuomintang and wealthy businessmen and gentry fled south in haste. Hangzhou has become an empty city, and there is not a yacht on the West Lake. Kuomintang officials who fled the railway station and bus station scrambled to grab the road. In this case, what to do for 1 10 has become an urgent problem. To this end, Liao, Liao and the officers who supported the uprising met many times to exchange information and analyze the situation. Everyone agreed that the situation was complicated at that time, and there was no direct contact with the People's Liberation Army and guerrillas, and the blind uprising might be wiped out. Finally, I decided not to continue south with the Kuomintang and seized the opportunity of the Zhejiang-Jiangxi uprising. To this end, they immediately separately do related work: send people to find the PLA and guerrillas; Try to delay the withdrawal from the south; Start to disperse and resettle family members. At this moment, Hou Jingru, commander of the 17th Kuomintang Corps with uprising plan, led 3 18 divisions to retreat to Tunxi in southern Anhui, and called Liao to discuss relevant matters with him. Mei Manfang, the reliable munitions director who Liao sent for many years, contacted Tunxi by radio and password. As the situation changed rapidly, Mei had left Tunnan when she arrived in Tunxi, and the two could not meet. A few days later, 3 18 Division withdrew to Yuhang County, ready to continue its southward withdrawal. The news Liao heard. In order to win more troops to join the uprising, regardless of his personal safety, he personally took a few followers to the headquarters of the 3 18 Division in Yuhang, persuading the teacher Peng Huaimin not to retreat south and stay to unite the uprising. But Peng has more concerns, which he has not confirmed. Later, under the leadership of Hou Jingru, the 3 18 Division also held an uprising.
After mid-April, the 1 10 division had to continue to withdraw southward as ordered, because the contact with the guerrillas had not been implemented and the PLA had not been known where it had arrived. When the troops arrived in Xiaoshan, a "businessman" came from the division, handed a letter to the guard at the door, and then turned around and left. Liao was overjoyed when he opened the letter. The author claims to be a good friend of cousin Liao and lives in a hotel in Hangzhou, hoping to meet him. The letter was signed by Yang Dalun. Liao knew that this was the long-awaited PLA liaison, so he immediately sent Liao, the master adjutant, by jeep to Hangzhou to pick up Yang Dalun and return to his hometown in Xiaoshan. 1949 In late April, 1 10 Division was transferred to Yiwu, Zhejiang Province to take over the defense of the 35th Division of the Kuomintang. Yiwu at that time was in rags. Although it is a county, it is actually only as big as a town. On may 1 day, all divisions and regiments arrived in yiwu and settled in the suburbs. At dawn on May 2, Liao led the team directly under the division to arrive, and the division headquarters was located in the county library with only a few bungalows. On the morning of the same day, Li Yingbo, a senior adviser to Wu Pai, commander of the 85th Army, took a chief staff officer, a company engineer and a train to Yiwu Station. Li conveyed Wu's order and asked all the family members of the 1 10 division to get on the bus immediately, send them to Yushan County, the terminal of the Zhejiang-Jiangxi line, and then return to Fujian by bus. Obviously, Wu has doubts about 1 10 division. Once the family members were removed, they became hostages, the troops fell into their hands, and the uprising went up in smoke. Therefore, despite Li Yingbo's repeated urging and according to the commander's orders, Liao always needed time to raise funds and food. It is not an excuse for his family to go to Hangzhou to see a doctor. He insisted on not calling his family to get on the bus. The two sides argued until noon. In order to ease the tension and make the uprising go smoothly, Liao took the whole family on the train as the case may be. Li Yingbo and others watched Liao get on the bus, and at the same time, considering their own safety, they drove away from Yiwu that afternoon. When the train arrived in Jinhua, the Liao family got off and went to Guangzhou by bus. After the army uprising, they turned to Hong Kong and never returned to the army.
Li Yingbo didn't receive the families of officers of the 1 10 division, which made Wu even more suspicious. He immediately ordered to stop the delivery of weapons to 1 10 division, and made a report to his superior Li Yannian, saying that "1 10 division may have a change". On the morning of May 3, I personally called Liao and told him that he had received an order that the 1 10 division was under his command and asked the whole division to get ready immediately. When the receiving train arrived, the whole division boarded the bus and retreated in the direction of Fujian. Li's attitude is very tough, and he also threatened that "violation of orders will be investigated". After Liao answered the phone, he felt that the situation was quite serious. The military train will arrive in the afternoon. If he hesitates again, once he is controlled by Li Yannian, it will be difficult to find an opportunity for uprising. So after consulting with Yang Dalun, he decided to rebel on the spot.
1 10 division's uprising had a great shock to the Kuomintang military and political circles. On May 5th, newspapers in Guangzhou published a wanted order "Liao and Liao led the mutiny and tried to arrest them", and newspapers in Hong Kong and other places also published a lot of news about the uprising. The uprising disrupted the Kuomintang's strategic plan to stick to the Qiantang River, swept away the obstacles for the People's Liberation Army to advance southward, and was of great significance to accelerating the total collapse of Kuomintang reactionaries in the mainland.
In mid-May, the 1 10 division was reorganized according to the order of the Second Field Army Command. The original 1 10 division was assigned to three divisions of the twelfth army, and the teams directly under the division, including the "student team", were incorporated into the teams directly under the twelfth army. Since then, the officers and men of the 1 10 uprising division have joined the ranks of the People's Liberation Army, followed the army south, pursued the Kuomintang deserters, and started a new battle course.
