The team coached by coach Carter is almost all black children, the only white one, and his father is also in prison. In addition, we can see that the drug trade, even guns, murders and other phenomena are also reflected in their activities. In Richmond High School where he teaches, the annual graduation rate is only 50%, and only 6% of them go to college. All these show that these students live in the social environment of low-rise blocks in the United States.
This highlights why coach Carter has to make every student meet the standard before he can participate in the competition and training. He wants to send the children of the basketball team to college!
Coach Carter graduated from Richmond High School and joined the college basketball team with great achievements. As a black player and coach, he deeply felt the existence of racial discrimination and social class differences. As a black child, only through learning and enterprising can we get out of the inherent social circle and have a possible opportunity. Otherwise, he may become a criminal or a dead body in the street one day.
The subtitles at the end of the film explain the achievements of several people in Richmond high school basketball team. Six of them went to college and five won scholarships. We can imagine that this is an achievement that this high school has never had before, but we are even more delighted that these high school graduates can finally break through the inherent social limitations and start a better life!
