Lonely Travel is an excerpt from Cao Wenxuan's novel The Straw House.
The Grass House, which won the gold medal in Soong Ching Ling Literature Award, can be said to be a representative bildungsroman of China. Taking a primary school with more than 200,000 words in nine chapters as the background, this paper describes the study, life and growth of several boys and girls such as Sang Sang, Du Xiaokang, Touhe, Paper Moon and Xima, which is full of hardships and pains, but also shines with wonderful and charming human light. The structure of the straw house is also unique. On the premise of several main characters running through, each chapter (or two chapters on the same topic) is relatively independent, focusing on depicting the growth of a teenager. Among them, Red Gate (1) and Red Gate (2) are mainly described by the boy Du Xiaokang. If Sang Sang's growth is based on his illness, and the growth of Paper Moon is closely related to her "fatherless" experience, then Du Xiaokang's growth stems from the decline of their family's "plummeting" and the unbearable loneliness that even adults can't bear when they follow their father to the distant reed.
The coming of loneliness and the changes of Du Like's well-off family are sudden and unprepared. Du Xiaokang, once the only son of a rich family in the village, was once the "boss" in the "grass house" and the "big monitor" admired by all children. He just accepted the pain of "dropping out of school" and had to follow his father on the journey of "saving the family".
A small wooden boat is sailing on the water. "Du Xiaokang looked back and Yau Ma Tei disappeared. Looking back, there was nothing but hazy tree smoke." When he suddenly found himself "in a foreign land", he felt a sense of loneliness that he had never felt before. This loneliness is not unique to a child like him. Even his "vicissitudes" father dared not stop the boat and duck. "It seems that if he is a little slower, he will suddenly be as overwhelmed as his son and full of fear ahead, which will also make him give up the idea of leaving Yau Ma Tei." When he arrived in Ludang, "reeds surrounded the boat like a million mountains", and loneliness surrounded Du Xiaokang like a million mountains, which made him "have a feeling that he could never escape". I haven't seen anyone for more than ten days in a row, and the conversation between my father and him is "more and more monotonous." On the one hand, the world is largely omitted and simplified; on the other hand, it seems that "the whole world is full of loneliness". He is so timid and scared. The panic can't be dispelled, and he can't sleep even near his father. Unable to bear the burden of loneliness, he began to miss home day by day until he dreamed of seeing his mother crying loudly at night and waking his father up. However, since we have entered that reedy place, there is no way out. As the days passed, "both father and son knew this in their hearts: they could not avoid loneliness". All Du Xiaokang can do is "endure" loneliness, and he "has no choice". In the hardships of lonely and helpless life, immature nature has become the only "refuge" for young Du Xiaokang.
At dusk, the heat of the river fluctuates with the smoke; The moon rises from the eastern end of the river; In summer, an unknown herb between lush reeds exudes a faint fragrance in the air; In the reed leaves by the water, dozens and hundreds of fireflies gather together, which can actually light up the water ... nature accepted the boy with its broad mind; It infects this teenager with an elegant gesture; It soothes the lonely soul of teenagers by singing softly. Nature not only creates endless loneliness, but also throws teenagers into "helpless territory" again and again; It shows its quiet and beautiful charm to teenagers again and again, making teenagers increasingly indifferent, quiet, firm and confident in loneliness, gradually removing impetuousness and entering a cold and profound realm. From "unbearable" loneliness to "enduring" loneliness and then to "enjoying" loneliness, Du Xiaokang's world is finally "sunny after the rain". He found that "the sky is brighter than any other night". He had never seen such a blue sky and the moon was "so bright". After fighting with the storm, he lay on a reed, chewed the tender white reed root, looked at the sky in a foreign land, and "inevitably thought of his mother and many children in Yau Ma Tei" in his heart, but at that time, he didn't cry again.
At the end of the article, the author has such a beautiful and warm description: "Ducks grow up and become real ducks. Their feathers began to become bright and dense, and a drop of water could not be poured in. The drake has become more beautiful, and the blue feathers and purple feathers with different shades shine like satin in the sun. " Behind these beautiful ducks, we saw the figure of the boy. He also grew up, strengthened and matured.
In the excerpt, the author named this paragraph of less than 5,000 words "Lonely Journey", which is of great significance. The road of life is long and arduous, and everyone has to "walk alone", especially in today's increasingly modern mode of production and lifestyle, loneliness has become an unavoidable "state of life" for human beings. "Facing loneliness" has become a necessity of life. However, loneliness is not autism, despair, negativity, depression, or falling into decadent mood. Loneliness liberates mankind from the original narrow personal experience, expands people's observation and understanding of the world and life in the distance gained by loneliness, and makes many discoveries that have never been made before. Loneliness makes people's eyes and mind calm, and loneliness helps people get rid of impetuousness that affects the depth of thinking and confusion that hinders the quality of observation. Therefore, loneliness is not only a necessity in life growth, but also a necessity in life growth. Romain rolland once described loneliness like this ... a good habit of caring about social life should not prevent each of you from devoting yourself to your inner life. In the torrent of constant actions and feelings, you should keep a single room for yourself, leave the crowd and live alone, so that you can recognize your weakness, think deeply, and touch the earth again like Antai ... "Cao Wenxuan also highly affirmed the role of loneliness in personal growth in an article written a long time ago:" It is a normal and healthy state of mind-if the degree is appropriate. It marks a person's maturity. It makes people less blind. It gives people a quiet life and protects their physical and mental health in the hustle and bustle of life. "
For Du Xiaokang, the desolate world composed of sky, reeds, floods, strong winds, rainstorms, boats, ducks, diseases, cold, hunger and sadness has become an indelible memory in his life. Everything that is saturated with loneliness bothers him, tortures him, educates him and inspires him. When their father and son fell into poverty again because they mistakenly put ducks in other people's fish ponds, when Du Xiaokang returned to Yau Ma Tei with his dying father, he was not the Du Xiaokang he was a few months ago. Although his hair is dry and his face is thin, his eyes are surprisingly bright, revealing a precocious god that Yau Ma Tei children can't have. Even later, when he set up a stall to sell goods at the entrance of the "Yau Ma Tei Primary School" where he once studied, "Du Xiaokang, who was immersed in superiority all day in Yau Ma Tei, did not look humble at all", which shocked the teachers and students of the whole school. Du Xiaokang is already a teenager much older than himself. He really grew up.
Growth is a wonderful process, and this process is not always "smooth sailing", it is often full of bitterness, pain, humiliation and tears. Growth also requires a "price". Loneliness is one of the most precious things, and it is a beautiful and cruel topic that life will give everyone sooner or later. Du Xiaokang, a teenager in Yau Ma Tei who has experienced a "lonely journey", will certainly grow up, because that loneliness tore off his childish shell and carefully carved his soul.
