There were five pavilions before 1989: Pavilion 3, Pavilion 4, Pavilion 5, Pavilion 6 and Theme Pavilion. Starting from 1990, there are six pavilions: 1 Pavilion, Pavilion 3, Pavilion 4, Pavilion 5, Pavilion 6 and Theme Pavilion. A total of 8 189 publishing companies participated in the exhibition in 1989, among which Germany has the largest number of publishing companies, followed by Britain, the United States and France, exhibiting 340,000 books with an exhibition area of 97,000 square meters. The Peace Prize of the German Book Industry Association is awarded once every exhibition. Before 1988, it was a professional visit in the morning and opened to the public in the afternoon. From 1989, it was changed to professional visit for the first three days and open to the public for the last three days. The fare is 8 marks.
