Libraries with Library Cards: Past and Present of Library Cards
Some changes in the number, conditions and materials of library cards show the remarkable achievements of library cause in the past 30 years of reform and opening up. Most libraries in the world manage their readers by handling various borrowing cards or reader cards (hereinafter referred to as reader cards). The reader card is the symbol of readers' use of the library, and it also has distinct characteristics of the times. I have worked in the National Library for more than 30 years, including 4 years in the accreditation office/kloc-0. I personally experienced the rapid development of the library cause in the past 30 years of reform and opening up, and witnessed the great changes in the number, conditions and materials of readers' cards. Because of the convenience of work, I have collected many library cards (cards) issued by the National Library from the 1950s to the present. These old library cards show the remarkable achievements of library cause since the reform and opening up. On June 5438+1 October1day, 2004, the readers' cards of the national library were merged with those of the national library, so that readers can open, return and use them in the new library and branch library. Except for 42 days after the National Library was closed due to SARS in 2003, the number of readers of the National Library has entered a stable growth period since 200 1 year, which is about 1.5-0.2 million people/year.

The above reader data shows that only a few people have the privilege to use the National Library during the closed and semi-closed period, and most ordinary readers are rejected. Nowadays, the number of reader cards is "one year left", and a large number of readers enjoy the opportunities brought by the reform and opening up of the National Library. Reader's card is the symbol of readers' use of the library, and readers must meet certain conditions before they can apply for reader's card. China's long-term social hierarchy is a solid barrier for readers' equal rights, and the social hierarchy is also reflected in the conditions for libraries to handle readers' cards. During the period of 1989, the conditions for Beijing Library to apply for library cards were very strict: only a few researchers and senior people in Beijing could apply for them, and the masses of other professions, other regions and other classes were excluded. Libraries should create equal access to knowledge and information for everyone in society. Equal service is the most basic concept in a democratic society, and it is also an important support for the humanistic spirit of the library. In recent years, with the vigorous implementation of national democratic politics, the equal service of libraries has begun to be concerned, which has also been confirmed in the conditions for handling reader cards: at present, the conditions for handling reader cards in the National Library have lifted many restrictions on readers' occupation, region, social status, age and so on.
