What is information retrieval?
Information Retrieval is a book published by Science Press in 2006 by Xu Tianxiu.

brief Introduction of the content

This book is based on the introduction of modern information retrieval methods and technologies. On the basis of comprehensively expounding the basic knowledge, tools and systems of information retrieval, this paper mainly introduces the retrieval and utilization of important electronic information resources and network information resources at home and abroad, and also introduces some important printed retrieval reference books, which provides readers with more comprehensive information retrieval knowledge.

This book is a tool-based book, providing a wide range of information retrieval disciplines, and paying attention to the latest version as much as possible. It is a highly applied monograph for learning information retrieval methods and skills.

This book can be used not only as a teaching material for undergraduates and postgraduates in normal universities, comprehensive universities and universities of science and engineering, but also as a reference book for teaching, scientific research and information users in all walks of life.

order

In the information society, people refer to information, material and energy as the three major elements for the survival and development of human society. Information is an important factor to promote the development of social economy, science and technology and human life. The scientific and technological progress and social development of a country depend more and more on the development and utilization of information. Whoever can fully develop and effectively use information resources will seize the commanding heights of scientific and technological development.

The information environment of society makes the society put forward higher requirements for talents, and information literacy has become one of the basic qualities necessary for modern talents. Nowadays, information is exploding. Moreover, the information carrier has also undergone tremendous changes. In addition to the traditional paper information, a large number of magnetic carrier information, electronic information and various online information emerge every day. The diversity, discreteness and disorder of these massive information, as well as its complex retrieval interface and usage method, increase the difficulty of information utilization and greatly affect the quality and efficiency of people's access to information.

1984 The Ministry of Education proposed to offer the course "Literature Retrieval and Utilization" for college students. Information Retrieval is the continuation and development of this course. Its purpose is to cultivate students' information quality, make them familiar with retrieval tools and systems, master the methods and skills of information retrieval, improve their self-study ability and stimulate their innovation ability on the basis of enhancing their information awareness. Therefore, on the basis of long-term teaching of information retrieval course, we summed up experience and absorbed the essence of various related teaching materials to compile the book Information Retrieval.

This textbook mainly introduces teachers' majors and other disciplines. Therefore, the professional information retrieval introduced is more comprehensive. Its characteristics are as follows:

(1) According to the comprehensive and multidisciplinary characteristics of normal universities, this paper introduces the information retrieval of most disciplines and specialties involved in normal universities.

(2) Electronic retrieval tools have the advantages of convenient and quick access to information, and are well received by users. There are more and more electronic retrieval systems and tools, and many databases are published in various disciplines. In order to highlight the electronic retrieval tools, this textbook specially sets a chapter on "Utilization of Comprehensive Electronic Information Resources".

(3) Relatively speaking, there are not many publications of electronic information resources in social science information retrieval, so the utilization part of electronic information resources in this chapter is introduced after retrieval of reference books; Several commonly used retrieval reference books introduced in natural science have their corresponding electronic versions. In order to recommend electronic resources, the electronic version is introduced first, and then the corresponding printed retrieval tools are introduced.

(4) Most libraries in China have realized automation and networking of management. In order to help readers make effective use of modern library resources, we specially take "Introduction to Modern Libraries and Their Utilization" as a chapter to help readers understand modern libraries and achieve the purpose of making effective use of the collected literature resources.
