The predecessor of Shanghai Theatre Academy is Shanghai Experimental Theatre School. 1949 10, Shanghai Experimental Theatre School was renamed Shanghai Theatre Academy. During the period of 1952, the national colleges and universities were reorganized, and the drama department of Shandong University Art Department merged with the Shanghai Xingzhi Art School Drama Troupe and was formally established, renamed the East China Branch of the Central Academy of Drama.

On March 30th, 2008, the Asia-Pacific Drama Education Center of UNESCO International Drama Association was established in Shanghai Theatre Academy, and the center will be located in Shanghai Theatre Academy. After the establishment of the center, it will promote academic exchanges and cooperation among drama schools in the Asia-Pacific region, hold professional forums, and launch regional cooperation to train graduate students.
