What should a novice prepare for the first step in publishing a book?
Another friend came to consult me and took out a book. What kind of operation process is there?

I have answered these questions several times, and I think it is better to briefly summarize them and share them with you.

Of course, you have to write100000 words (and above) in one breath, and then go to the publishing house or publishing house.

I don't usually recommend this. Because it is very likely that after you finish writing, you can't find a publishing house that is willing to sign up, or you are willing to sign up for cooperation, but you need to add, delete and modify a lot of space.

For a novice writer who hasn't published a book, I suggest you find a planning editor to report a topic first.

I suggest that you prepare the following materials when you report the topic to the planning editor:

1. Author profile (refer to JD.COM, Dangdang, Amazon, Douban).

2. Content introduction.

3. Outline of contents.

4. Sample chapter (about three or five thousand words to ten thousand words)

5. Analysis of similar competing products in the market. What are the features and advantages of this book beyond competing products?

6. Reader positioning (which groups of people are most likely to pay for your book).

7. Marketing point (book positioning, how to maximize marketing, how to surpass competing products)

8. The author's own promotion resources (if any), such as acquaintances in the media who can brush their faces, this book is purchased in large quantities as internal training materials or reference books for MBA and reading clubs, acquaintances promoted by e-commerce platforms can brush their faces, and celebrities and acquaintances can send Weibo and WeChat official accounts, book reviews and recommendations. The more, the better.

Need 1 to 4. The last few items are extra points.

These materials should be as detailed as possible. The planning editor of a publishing house or book company will decide the next step according to whether the selected topic is consistent with the product line of his own unit or company.

If the topic meets the needs of the editorial product line, the editor will report the topic to his leader, and after the leader agrees, he will hold a topic discussion meeting. After all the people in the discussion meeting vote, they can sign a contract with the author.

For topics with good market prospects, potential to sell well and large profit margins, the author will be given a certain percentage of royalties (or manuscript fees, or manuscript fees+royalties).

For books with no market prospect, the publishing house may lose money, so the author needs to pay the cost and editing labor. For book companies that pursue bestsellers, they generally don't sign such books. )

After signing the contract, the editor will provide you with all-round publishing services, and will give you suggestions on catalog structure, length, style bias, title, chapter title and so on according to the factors such as book positioning, marketing direction and channel advantages.

Finally, I wish you an early realization of your desire to publish a book.
