① Rocca angle
Let's start with Cape Rocca, the westernmost point of the European continent, which is a must-see spot for most Portuguese tourists. In fact, Cape Rocca has nothing to see except the sea view. There is a lighthouse and a cross monument facing the Atlantic Ocean. The monument is engraved with the famous Portuguese poet Camons's famous sentence "The land ends here and the sea begins in Sri Lanka" (Onde a terra acaba e o mar come? Answer.
The history of the lighthouse standing on the cliff140m high can be traced back to 1772. I didn't find the cross. The monument inscribed with the poet's famous sentence stands at 1979. When I first came here, I felt two things most obviously. One is a strong wind that can blow people away, and the other is a fleshy land with yellow and white flowers. Later, it was found that this plant can be found everywhere in coastal areas, which is "edible" according to the literal translation of Mo Xie chrysanthemum or ice flower and ice fruit (Latin Carpobrotus edulis). Strange name, it seems to be really edible after checking the information, and even a company extracts its juice to produce water-retaining agent.
In the gale, it was not easy for me to walk to the edge of the cliff and overlook the sea with a drop of 100 meters.
② Cape Saint Vincent
Cape Saint Vincent is located in the southwest corner of Portugal and belongs to the Faroe region. When the Romans came here, they thought it was the end of the world. Like Cape Rocca, Cape Saint Vincent also has a lighthouse, which was set up by Queen Maria II in 1846. In addition to looking at the lighthouse, those cliffs that extend like blades to the ocean are also good scenery.
Near the cape, there is a Santo António de Belixe fortress, the exact date of construction is unknown. It was built by Manuel I and opened as a tourist attraction in 1960, but it was closed for maintenance in 1990 because the cliff where the fortress is located was seriously eroded. I couldn't get in the last time I went. It seems that no solution has been found.
A little further, it is Sagres Richebourg. The fortress was built in the15th century, and was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 20 17. It is the place that receives the most tourists in Faroe.
What's in the castle? This old church is said to be related to Prince Enrique, the leader of the great voyage. At that time, Prince Enrique built the world's first maritime school, observatory, library, port and shipyard in Sagray, which laid the foundation stone for Portugal to become a maritime hegemon in the future.
Portugal's most popular beer "Sagrish Beer" is named after this, and the name of Sagrish, a famous sailing training ship of the Portuguese Navy, also comes from this.
In addition to the old church, there is a mysterious circular structure called "Rosa dos Vento", which consists of 32 rows of stones of different sizes, arranged radially from the center. It was discovered in the17th century, but there has been no unified statement about its use. Presumably similar to our sundial. Hikers and cyclists can be found everywhere on the trails in Cape Saint Vincent, but they are rare in Cape Rocca.
③? Spiquel pt
The last one, Spitzer Point in setubal, is my personal favorite. The scenery on the road is green in winter and looks like autumn in summer. The seasons in Portugal are only divided into rainy season and dry season.
Today, this promontory is far less famous than the other two, but it wasn't hundreds of years ago (14th century). At that time, fishermen from Caprica found the Madonna on a rock in the Cape and regarded it as a miracle and became a famous pilgrimage site (later research suggested that it should be dinosaur fossils or footprints).
/kloc-In the middle of the 0/4th century, people built a small church to protect the Madonna, and now the lighthouse is built on the ruins of this church. The lighthouse has never been opened, so I'm not sure whether the Madonna is still there. 1707, Notre Dame was built here.
In order to receive a steady stream of pilgrims, in 17 15, the existing wing Casa dos Círios on both sides of the church was built, and in 1770, water houses and canals were also built to solve the drinking water problem of pilgrims.
Cabo Church is a baroque church, which was founded in 170 1 and completed in 1707. The interior has been decorated for decades, and it is said that it is very interesting. There is a famous painter Lorenzo da Cunha (Louren? O da Cunha) is the only remaining work in Portugal, and it is a perspective view of the ascension of the Virgin Mary (all the other works of the painter were destroyed by the earthquake).
The water house was built in 1770, and D.JoséI built it to provide water for pilgrims. The water supply canal of the water house is 2.5 kilometers long. There is a marble fountain with Berne-style sculptures and murals about hunting.
The rock wall of Spitzer Point is also very distinctive, with layers overlapping and leaning towards the sea.
As early as 1430, monks built a lighthouse on the site, but the effect was not good. The coast is still called "Black Coast" by foreign ships (especially British ships). Now this lighthouse is one of the six lighthouses planned by Marquis of Pombal after the earthquake 1758, which was completed in 65435.
At present, the oldest building in the complex is Ermida da Memória, a mini church on a cliff. This is an old building of15th century, which contains ancient tile paintings. There used to be a ball on it, which disappeared mysteriously in the 1990s. This mini chapel is the most popular place to shoot sunsets.
Although there are no groups of pilgrims now, there are still many people coming here to watch the sunset, some people driving RV to picnic with folding tables and chairs, and even vendors will set up stalls on weekends.
Which of the three cape in Portugal do you like?
