Is reading English picture books and stories to children really useful for learning English?
It is an unchangeable fact that children in China learn English without a language environment. Parents who have the financial ability will of course send their children abroad for training. But can't children who can't go abroad learn English well? No, at present, a new English learning method is adopted, that is, reading English picture books with children. Although it is not as effective as living in an English environment, it provides an all-English environment to some extent, especially after story readers become foreign teachers from English-speaking countries. Reading English original picture book stories with children can really bring children a comprehensive experience of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

In China, children's exposure to English begins in kindergarten, and the daily exposure to English is nothing more than the time of class in kindergarten and the time of English training classes outside, which adds up to no more than three hours. A caring mother will tutor at home, so that she will have more opportunities to contact English. This is the whole English environment. But we know that the kindergarten curriculum is based on textbooks, and the sentences and words in the textbooks are all made up.

1. English textbooks are not as coherent as English picture books in content, and the story of picture books is ups and downs, and English textbooks are all section by section.

2. The sentences in English picture books are written by children writers in English-speaking countries, which are not only more original in sentence and language characteristics, but also widely used in words, involving all aspects of life, which is more conducive to cultivating children's sense of English language.

3. English picture book stories, whether pictures or languages, are very lively and interesting, and it is easier to attract children's attention and interest than English textbooks.

Here, I share the feelings of a mother reading English picture books to her children:

Hello, Puppy is one of the English picture book stories recommended by Wang Peizan. While reading this book, I met such a problem. The child said, mom, I don't want to listen to English. I was a little disappointed at that time, but I ignored them and insisted on reading it. In this way, the child will get used to it in about three or four days, and the child will get used to it in about two weeks.

Next is the second book "Today is Monday", Eric's book, which is characterized by very simple sentences. This book is studied seven days a week and contains some food vocabulary. I learned the words seven days a week in the fifth grade of primary school. I feel that my pronunciation is not very good and I don't have much hope. When I first started reading, their reaction was very dull. I had a brainwave and made up a chant. Very rhythmic, they immediately became interested. After listening, I'll say it again. I talked backwards from Sunday to Monday. Later, this book was mastered faster than the first one, and they were often willing to say it themselves.

Now they have the same English stories as Chinese, and they have to listen to them every day. And I watch it every day, and I will stick to it.

Therefore, reading English picture book stories is really effective in cultivating children's English ability, but it needs long-term persistence. This will not happen overnight. It is impossible to see the effect if you just take reading English picture books as an occasional leisure.
