With a collection of 22 million volumes, the National Library is the largest library in Asia, with the largest collection of Chinese books in the world. The National Library is located next to the scenic Zizhuyuan Park in Beijing. It is a magnificent building with three floors underground and nineteen floors above ground. It contains more than 3,500 Oracle bones engraved with ancient hieroglyphs, 1.6 million online ancient books, thousands of Dunhuang suicide notes, 1.2 million foreign language books and periodicals and dozens of dynamically updated electronic databases. Starting from 19 16, the museum began to accept the submission of official domestic publications and became the national headquarters; Starting from 1987, it accepts the delivery of domestic electronic publications. It is also the National Bibliography Center (ISSN) and the Internet Information Center. At present, the National Library has formed a digital library alliance with 90 domestic libraries to promote the development and application of digital public information services in China. In February, 2000 1,1,the second phase of the National Library started construction, which will make the new building area of the National Library reach 70,000 square meters, with a total area of 240,000 square meters, ranking third in the world. The second phase of the project will also be closely combined with the China Digital Library Project, and a total of 20TB of data and information resources will be built to change the situation of lack of Chinese information on the Internet. At present, the Network Information Center of the National Library can provide readers with 1000 trillion information service online. Some classic and basic knowledge books are available for readers to read online for free.
