The Library of Congress is the national library of the United States. It has millions of books and other things. It has newspapers and popular publications, as well as letters of historical significance. It also has maps, photos, art prints, movies, recordings and musical instruments. There are more than/kloc-0.0 million objects in total. The Library of Congress is open to the public from Monday to Saturday except public holidays. Anyone can go there to read the collection. But no one is allowed to take books out of the building. The Library of Congress was founded in 1800. At first, 1 1 boxes of books were put in a room in the Capitol. By 18 14, the collection of books has increased to about 3000 volumes. They were all destroyed that year, when the Capitol was burned down in the American-British war. In order to help rebuild the library, Congress bought the books of President Thomas Jefferson. Mr Jefferson's library includes 7,000 books in seven languages. 1897, the library moved into its own building across the street from the Capitol. Today, there are three buildings with library books. The library provides books and materials to the US Congress, and also lends books to other American libraries, government agencies and foreign libraries. It buys some of its own books and gets others as gifts. It also obtains information through its copyright office. Anyone who wants to get copyright protection for publications in the United States must send two copies to the library. This means that the Library of Congress receives almost everything published in the United States.
