Collectors in the Republic of China
Those collectors in the Republic of China

Since ancient times, due to different times, different financial resources and different collection environments, collectors' collection realm has always been high and low. It is admirable that a large number of collectors have emerged in the nearest Republic of China. While American collectors marvel at the grandeur and accuracy of their collections, they will also get some enlightenment today.

The collection craze in the Republic of China created a large number of famous collectors. Their anecdotes have been passed down to this day. They hide for love and specialize in it, which not only preserves important historical and cultural resources, but also makes these cultural heritages carry forward in their hands.

Because of goodness, collectors in the Republic of China are all sentient beings.

At the beginning of the 20th century, wars were frequent in China, the national collection capacity was insufficient, and a large number of national treasures were scattered among the people. As a result, there has been a folk collection fever, and many famous collectors have emerged.

These Tibetan collectors include experts who specialize in literature and history research, officials who are obsessed with collecting, and artists who are famous for their calligraphy and painting, such as Pang Yuanji, Zhang Xueliang, Wang Cunxin, Xu Beihong, Zhang Daqian and Zhang Heng.

Pang Yuanji, Zhang Daqian, Zhang Heng and Wang Chuncheng are among them. With its rich collections, fine categories and great influence, it is known as the six masters of calligraphy and painting collection in the 20th century. Pang Yuanji is the first of the six great masters, with thousands of ancient paintings and calligraphy. Wang called him the world's largest collector of China paintings and calligraphy. In the collection world, it is also called Pompeii. Pang Yuanji edited the Record of Xu Zhai's Famous Paintings and the Continuation of Xu Zhai's Famous Paintings, that is, 634 masterpieces were selected from his library for recording.

During the Republic of China, collectors not only collected a lot, but also used unscrupulous means to satisfy the fine works of ancient art, and the collector Zhang Boju spent money like water. Most of his collections are national treasures, which are relatively old paintings and calligraphy in China. Zhang Boju has been involved in the collection since he was 30 years old, and his hand is a top collection. At that time, he bought Fan Zhongyan's Tao Te Ching and Du Fu's Good Poems of Northern Song Dynasty for 6000 yuan. Zhang Boju also bought Zhan Ziqian's You Chuntu for 7,000 yuan by way of real estate mortgage, and got the nickname "Master You Chuntu".

Zhang Daqian bought famous places of all ages with his keen vision and abundant financial resources. He spent several hundred taels of gold to buy Han Xizai's The Night Banquet in Ancient Hong Zhong in the Five Dynasties and Dong Yuan's Xiaoxiang Map in the Five Dynasties. He also exchanged 500 taels of gold and 20 Ming Dynasty calligraphy and paintings for Dong Yuan's masterpiece Night Scene on the Riverside.

Collectors in the Republic of China not only have extraordinary collections and rich varieties, but also pay special attention to the systematization and collection context of the collections. Zhang Congyu was born into a noble family. Since his grandfather, three generations have been appreciating and collecting big eyes. He once collected famous works of Tang, Song and Yuan Dynasties, but basically did not accept works of Ming and Qing Dynasties. In 1930s and 1940s, its collection was comparable to that of Zhang Daqian and Wu Hufan. 1947, the famous scholar Zheng Zhenduo compiled a collection of famous paintings since the Tang and Song Dynasties for him. Many rare treasures are recorded in the book, such as Zhou Fang's baby-playing pictures in Tang Dynasty, Zhushantang's couplet poems in Yan Zhenqing in Tang Dynasty and Yi Yuanji's monkey pictures in Song Dynasty.
