What's the difference between footnotes, endnotes and references?
The differences between footnotes and endnotes are as follows:

1. Different text: Footnotes or endnotes consist of two interrelated parts, namely, the reference mark of the note and the corresponding text of the note. You can use any length of text in a note and format the note text just like any other text. References are used to explain the source of the article.

2. Different locations: Footnotes are generally located at the bottom of the page and can be used as comments on the contents of the document. Endnotes are generally located at the end of the document, listing the source of quotations, etc. References are published bibliographies cited by the author when writing, which are listed at the end of the article.

3. Different applications: footnotes explain a word or sentence in the text, which is inconvenient to explain in the text, for fear of affecting the continuity of the text, and an explanation is inserted at the top of the footer. It is a reference that only appears on the current page, not every page in this section. Endnotes are similar to captions in form and are generally used in sentences or paragraphs. There are explanations at the end of the full text, which are far from the main information. Reference is the division of paper content.

Word footnote setting skills

By default, Word separates footnotes and endnotes from the document body with thin solid lines. It is not difficult to modify this dividing line. The key is to know where to modify it. Select Menu View → Normal to ensure that the document is displayed in normal view, and then select View → Footnotes to open the Footnotes pane.

If the document contains only footnotes or endnotes, Word will automatically open the corresponding pane. If the document has both footnotes and endnotes, Word will ask which pane to open, select the appropriate pane, and then click OK.
