Wu weici: the love of joining hands with Lin yi
I have deep feelings for the library, and I can't live without it. My career has been in this field from the beginning, and I have gone through a process from knowing little to knowing much, which was realized through the guidance of teachers, the support of friends and my own efforts. This process has overcome many difficulties and obstacles, and every step is very gratifying.

I have never been satisfied with myself. I always feel that it is more practical to finish one thing. The most important thing in doing work is to have a scientific attitude and a spirit of seeking truth from facts. Don't exaggerate your achievements, be complacent, look down on others, look down on your own strengths, and don't compare your strengths with others' weaknesses. Only in this way can you live in harmony with teachers, classmates and colleagues in the academic field that I influence and make progress together.

I have been engaged in the teaching and research of library science all my life. This is the trajectory of my life. I have been walking on this road for most of my life, and I will continue to walk firmly. ...

In 2007, a "great event" happened in Turin. Professor Wu Weici, an iconic figure in the field of basic theoretical research and teaching of library science, celebrated his 70th birthday. Many colleagues and students who respect Mr. Wu picked up pens or wrote congratulatory messages or letters to celebrate his birthday. These congratulatory letters and telegrams were subsequently published and named "Salary Collection". Mr. Wu won this honor, which is inseparable from his academic education and personality. There is a saying describing Professor Wu, saying that he is "gentle and elegant, rigorous and realistic academically, rich in ideas and persistent", which has won the recognition of colleagues in the industry. It is more appropriate to use the word "salary adjustment" to summarize Wu Lao. Since 1973 10 transferred to Peking University Library Department (now Information Management Department) to teach, he has been deeply rooted in the cause of library science education. The 70-year-old Wu Lao is still taking his doctoral students. Speaking of the hand-in-hand relationship between Wu Lao and Turing, it can be traced back to 1957, when he was admitted to the Library Department of Peking University. This hand-in-hand is a lifetime ...

Entering the library science major

1September, 957, Wu weici passed the national examination and was admitted to the library department of Peking University. At that time, library science education in China was not very familiar. The Peking University Library Department admitted by Wu Weici was just established 10 years ago. The reason why he applied for this major is because he is really blind: "Fushan Middle School is located in a mountainous area, and there is nothing to play. We haven't even seen a movie. We just study all day. In such an environment, I formed the habit of reading. When I took the national examination, I only had a very simple idea. I thought it would be convenient to read books if I could work in a library in the future. It is with such an embarrassing idea that I stepped into this major. "

At that time, there were many famous teachers in the library department of Peking University. The founder of the department, the famous Dunhuang scholar and philologist, as well as professors such as Chen, Deng and so on, introduced young Wu Weici into the field of library science. He has been studying diligently in the strong learning atmosphere of Peking University. With the guidance and help of famous teachers, the more he learns, the more interested he becomes in this major.

196 1 year, Wu weici graduated from Peking University and was assigned to work in Tianjin library. This is 12. During the period of 12, he served as the training, business guidance, publicity and ancient books sorting work of grass-roots libraries ... Wu Weici valued the 12 years of working in Tianjin Library, "because it further verified and enriched my professional knowledge from the perspective of practice. Although the work content is limited, I have worked hard and my work attitude and quality have been well received by everyone. " This experience laid a practical foundation for Wu Weici's later teaching and research.

"Practice is very important. Only book knowledge, no practical experience, it is difficult to have further development. Practice has gradually made me understand a truth: the research of library science must be based on materialism, and the research without materialism must have the limitations of thinking.

Practice has taught me a lot that books can't. The problems encountered in practice and the knowledge learned are a kind of rich nutrition for my future teaching. I have written some books and many articles, and I always think that Tianjin Library is a fertile ground. This fertile soil has laid a good foundation for my further study of library science. "

Students are the most precious wealth.

1973, Wu weici was transferred back to Peking university to teach. "I returned to my alma mater and my mood became very good. Because I am studying at Peking University, I am very happy to come back and contribute to the development of my alma mater and the construction of library disciplines. " At that time, Wu Weici was in his thirties, a good age and full of energy. He inherited the work of the older generation of library science educators such as Wang Zhongmin and became one of the main designers of the basic courses of library science in national universities. At that time, all aspects of the conditions were very difficult. Wu Weici lives in Peking University and has to teach at Changping Branch. He must catch the bus to Changping for class at six o'clock in the morning. There were no highways at that time. It takes about an hour to walk from Peking University to Changping Branch. When I arrive at the branch school, I have to attend classes for more than three hours. After class, we can eat something in Changping, catch the bus back to Peking University immediately, and then go home by bike, often only once a week. In order to ensure the class time, Wu Weici has been riding a bike for more than 30 years. Later, when he was old, he was not allowed to ride at home, and his wife sold his bike. He was still uncomfortable for a while.

1Since September, 977, Wu Weici has been teaching the basic course Introduction to Library Science independently in Peking University. At that time, this course was offered as an introductory course for library science majors, that is, through teaching, beginners could have a basic understanding of the whole picture of library, library work and library cause. However, after a period of time, students reported that the teaching content was "thin" and "without the theoretical height of the subject", which could not satisfy their desire for knowledge, which was also a common phenomenon in colleges and universities at the same time. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of Wu Weici and other related course teachers. In the 1980s, library science developed in a comprehensive direction, and related disciplines infiltrated and merged with each other. From the description of technical methods to theoretical thinking, some theoretical works of library science abroad came out one after another. After several national seminars on basic courses in library department, the purpose of improving the theoretical teaching level of basic courses in library department is gradually achieved. In this academic environment and background, from 65438 to 0984, Wu Weici clearly stipulated in the syllabus of "Introduction to Library Science" that this course not only undertakes the task of professional enlightenment education, but also aims to help students master the basic theory and knowledge of library science systematically by using correct viewpoints and methods, find out the past, present and future trends in the research field of library science, and lay a preliminary theoretical foundation for learning other professional courses. To this end, he constantly updates the teaching content and strives to improve the scientific and systematic classroom teaching. After 10 years' efforts, the course content of Introduction to Library Science has undergone new changes, forming a new teaching layout based on basic theories and knowledge. This kind of pioneering work has been done many times in Wu Weici's long-term teaching and research work of basic theory of library science. He mainly wrote the first basic syllabus of library science and was the main participant in the first demonstration textbook Basic Library Science (198 1). Later, this book was selected as the first prize by the State Education Commission.

1983, Wu weici began to recruit graduate students, 1996, and began to recruit doctoral students. After enrolling doctoral students, he stopped enrolling master students. Due to limited energy, he can only concentrate on cultivating doctoral students. Professor Wu has trained 27 graduate students, about two thirds of whom are abroad, and most of them are also engaged in library science. "I focus on doctoral students. 1994 I was approved as a doctoral supervisor. At that time, doctoral supervisors were selected from all over the country, and there were only one or two places in a school. I have trained 25 doctoral students, 6 of whom are studying. I'm glad 19 people graduated. Now most of them have been promoted to professors, and some of them have been selected as doctoral supervisors. As backbones, they teach in colleges and universities, and some have trained their own doctoral students. " When it comes to his disciples, Professor Wu always smiles. Students are his most precious wealth.

"I have more than 50 master students and doctoral students, which can be said to have contributed their intelligence in library science." Wu Weici has some experiences in the process of doctoral training:

First, the relationship between the tutor and the students is both teachers and students and friends. He strictly and comprehensively requires students, pays attention to cultivating students' innovative ability, and trains doctoral students in strict accordance with the high standards of Peking University. Students all feel that they have gained a lot. Some students said that studying Dr. Wu's doctor changed my life track. I learned a lot from them.

Second, teachers should care for students in an all-round way and let them become talents. Not only care about their studies, but also care about their lives and employment.

Wu Weici firmly believes that students are the most precious wealth. He said: "This sentence can be understood as follows: these spoiled children are the wealth of society. In addition, they will eventually create more spiritual wealth for society, which is more precious." "Until now, I am still in the front line of cultivating doctoral students, engaged in teaching and research. I think the most important aspect of cultivating doctoral students is to find ways to bring them to the forefront of this discipline as soon as possible, so that they can carry out research in the forefront of this discipline, show their talents and publish some insightful papers. I think that as long as I can work in my lifetime, I will continue to train doctoral students. "

Wu Lao said that caring for students in an all-round way is by no means empty talk. He has many opportunities to go to various places to attend academic conferences or lectures every year, because peaches and plums are everywhere. Wherever he goes, students often come to see their teachers after hearing the news. No matter how many years ago, he can always say his name and work unit in one mouthful. Therefore, Wu Lao has won the heartfelt respect of many students.

Because of work needs, Wu Lao has probably been to the United States, France, the Netherlands, Japan and other dozens of countries to give lectures and attend academic conferences. This was mainly concentrated during his tenure as the director of Peking University Information Management Department. Because of these works, he has also established good academic ties with foreign scholars, and some of them have become good friends. Through them, Wu Laosui sent his doctoral students to schools in other parts of the country for training. For students, this is a good opportunity to broaden their horizons and let them deeply understand how to be a graduate student. Some students said, "I don't think scientific research and teaching can be closed, but should be open and more open." Only in this way can we better board the world stage. "

I have been diligent all my life and never stopped asking and learning.

Professor Wu Weici, who has been diligent all his life, has never relaxed his academic research in the field of basic theory of library science while taking good care of his students. Of course, this is also related to Peking University's adherence to high standards in evaluating teachers' academic research work. Since 1973, articles have been published every year, and a book has been published every two or three years. In terms of quantity, Professor Wu Weici has published more than 20 monographs and teaching materials such as Introduction to Library Science and Theory and Methods of Library Science, and published more than 300 papers. Participated in China Encyclopedia? Library science? Information science? The compilation of archival science volume, as the deputy editor-in-chief of Comprehensive Branch of Library Science, is its main contributor. 199 1 promoted to professor, 1994 promoted to doctoral supervisor.

1996-2002, Wu weici served as the director of the information management department of Peking University, and also served as the party secretary of the department for some time. At that time, his work was very busy, but in addition to completing administrative work, he insisted on publishing works. The conflict between time and work will inevitably lead to some contradictions, but "I feel that I have handled it better, the administrative work has been done, and the published works have not decreased", which is the result of hard work. Wu Lao is 72 years old this year. Before the age of 65, he didn't sleep every night before 12. "Now that I am old, I have to consider my own health, but I still insist on research. I think the research work is endless and there are still many things to do. "

In addition, he has many social positions, and once served as the convener of the discipline of library, information and archival science of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee. This is a very important job and a job with high academic status. He used to be the director of the Teaching Steering Committee of Library Science of the Ministry of Education, the vice chairman of library society of china (two sessions) and the director of academic committee (four sessions), and the adjunct professor of Nanjing University, Nankai University, Sun Yat-sen University and Jilin University. He is also the deputy director of the editorial board of Journal of University Library, and the editorial boards of core journals such as journal of library science in china and Journal of China Science and Technology Information Society. "As so many positions, for me personally, there are gains and losses. Generally speaking, although it takes some time and energy to do these academic part-time jobs, it is worthwhile as long as they serve the society. These works also helped me think about many problems, taught me how to organize library science research, found young and middle-aged scholars with strength and development potential, and mastered the ability to deal with some complex problems. I also learned how to communicate with young people, how to respect them, guide them and help them finish their work better. These social part-time jobs are very tiring and lacking, but for me, it is an exercise, an exercise and an improvement. As a scholar, you can't be a nerd, but you should be good at academic research in different aspects, different levels and different objects. "

Professor Li Chaoping, Department of Information Resources Management, School of Management, Zhejiang University, once commented: "For library science, some people's names seem to have symbolic significance. For example, Mr. Peng Feizhang reminds people of bibliography; Teacher Zhang Qiyu is reminiscent of information retrieval language; Teacher Wu Weici, anyone who is engaged in library science research, will connect teacher Wu with the basic theoretical research of library science without thinking. " Being able to let others associate themselves with a research field itself shows a person's achievements.
