Archives are the base for centralized custody of important archives of the Party and the state, and the center for all sectors of society to use archives information resources. Archival work is the main body of archival undertaking in China.
There are 38 16 archives at all levels in China, including 3046 national comprehensive archives, 225 national special archives, 42 departmental archives/kloc-0, 304 enterprise archives, 40 cultural institutions archives and 59 scientific and technological institutions archives.
The total construction area of the archives is 4,659,866 square meters, of which the warehouse area is 2,574,437 square meters. National archives at all levels have more than120,000 volumes of national key archives that need to be rescued.
Starting from 1984, the state allocated special funds to rescue these files. After years of hard work, by the end of 2000, 5 million copies of national key archives had been rescued. By the end of 2005, there were 40 12 archives in China, and 60160,000 volumes (pieces) of various archives had been opened.
The specific tasks of expanding data files mainly include three aspects:
1. Receive and collect archives and related materials with long-term and permanent preservation value of organs, organizations and their subordinate units at the corresponding level, and conduct scientific management;
2. Actively carry out archives utilization through various channels;
3. Participate in compiling historical records.
According to the region can be divided into:
(1) Central Archives, such as Central Archives, China No.1 Historical Archives, China No.2 Historical Archives, China Film Archive, etc.
(2) Local archives include provincial (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government), regional (cities and autonomous prefectures) and county-level archives, such as Beijing Archives, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Archives, Liuzhou Archives, Guilin Archives and Huma County Archives.
According to the professional can be divided into:
(1) Comprehensive archives such as Central Archives and Sichuan Provincial Archives.
(2) Professional archives, such as China People's Liberation Army Archives, China Photo Archives and Urban Construction Archives.
