Brief introduction of Zhao, a seal engraver and painter in Qing Dynasty. What are the characteristics of Zhao's seal engraving?
Zhao is a representative of Zhejiang seal cutting school. After the "Four Xiling Families" (Ding Jing, Jiang Ren, Huang Yi and Xi Gang), they are listed as "Four Xiling Families" (Chen Yuzhong, Chen Hongshou and Zhao), which are collectively called "Eight Xiling Families". He is a disciple of Chen Yuzhong, who is a master of seal cutting of Zhejiang School, combining the strengths of Huang Yi, Xi Gang and Chen Hongshou. After Jiaqing and Daoguang, he became famous, and the capable people were very helpful.

I try to be clever, the composition is steady and graceful, and the knife method is heavy and light. He is famous for his knife skills, but his gains and losses and his style are limited to this. As for the printing in his later years, it has become a habit and has been ridiculed by later generations as "phoenix-tailed crane knee"; In addition to the knife method, its patterns are less creative, tend to be rigid, and the border processing is slightly fine. Its seal edge is unique, the font is combined with lines, the knife method is spicy, and the line drawing is quite strong. He is diligent in playing with knives, and there are more than 1000 seals in the world today.

Yu has a solid foundation in epigraphy, and Ruan Yuan copied more ancient characters of Ding Yi Qi in Zhai Zhong than himself. It is said that he stays at home on weekdays, devotes himself to calligraphy and seal cutting, and often imitates the Buddha statue, so he has the name of fasting and "filling Luo Jiashi".

The seal of "Bu Jia Shi" can be regarded as his masterpiece, which is his own seal. The composition, seal cutting and knife cutting are all very particular. For example, the lower left side of the word "Luo" and the side of the word "Jia" are simple but not complicated, which is not only a typical structural method of Zhejiang School, but also shows its caution.

Except for seal cutting, Zhao's paintings and calligraphy are offensive, while landscape flowers have their own characteristics and charm. He was an official all his life. In his later years, he was displaced by the war in the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and died in a foreign country. There's "Never Leave the Family".

Exquisite Painting, Delicate Attention and Pleasure —— Zhao's "Double Hook Bamboo Stone Map"

Bamboo is one of the favorite painting themes of ancient painters in China. Because bamboo is tall and straight, restrained, open-minded, cold-resistant and immortal, ancient Chinese painters often regard it as a portrayal of spirit and a symbol of personality, whether it is plum, orchid, bamboo or chrysanthemum,

Zhao's works are also "three friends of Song, Zhu and Mei", and Xiu is one of them. As for the combination of bamboo cultivation and thin stone, it is a masterpiece of literati and painters from Song and Yuan Dynasties to the present. In the history of ancient painting in China, there are many painters who are good at writing bamboo and stone.

Generally speaking, bamboo painting can be divided into two categories: one is filled with colors with double hooks, and the other is freehand brushwork with ink (there are also colors instead of ink). The former is based on painting and devoted to form; The latter is based on writing and emphasizes Shen Feng. Zhao Meng said, "Stone white is like a fly, wood white is like a brush, and bamboo books should also have eight skills;" If anyone can understand this, you should know that calligraphy and painting are the same as "Yun Yun", that is, taking dead wood and bamboo stone as examples to illustrate the calligraphy principle of Chinese painting, especially literati painting. However, in Zhao's Double Hook Bamboo Stone Map (see right), bamboo is painted with double hooks. There are three pillars on the soil slope at the bottom of the picture, which are graceful and straight out of the picture. The bamboo leaves are lush, strewn about, and graceful, especially the light green rendering, which makes the whole bamboo full of vitality and freshness.

Generally speaking, Zhao can accurately grasp the shapes of bamboo poles, nodes and leaves, with strict statutes, meticulous brushwork, interspersed positions, natural and reasonable, moderate and dense, and quite skillful and ingenious. At the front end of bamboo, the painter painted a lake stone, which is exquisite and exquisite, which is also the usual method of Chinese literati painting. Its function is to set off bamboo and stabilize the picture. It should be noted that this lake stone written by Zhao has a unique shape, its center of gravity leans forward, and its composition is quite risky. However, the painter is really commendable. There is a layer of thatch around the lake stone, which is more conducive to the harmony and nature of the picture.

Generally speaking, Zhao's "Double Hook Bamboo Stone Map" has nothing novel in content, and there are not many places that are particularly commendable in painting language and techniques. However, it is not easy for a painter to show his interest in painting in plain subjects and show his skills in his usual language and techniques, but it is impossible for ordinary hands.

The picture is a colorful paper book with a length of 128.2 cm and a width of 6 1.5 cm. It is an intentional work of Zhao in his later years and is now in the Zhejiang Provincial Museum. In the era when Zhao lived, the feudal society was drawing to a close, the literati painting had declined, and the marine painting school that literati painting revived for the last time had appeared. Although Zhao has no direct connection with Shanghai School of Painting, his painting style still reveals some news about the change of painting form. Therefore, in a sense, Ye Zhao can be regarded as a transitional figure before Shanghai School.

A successful calligrapher may not be able to print, but a printer must be able to write. If they don't know calligraphy, they will never become a good seal engraver. Although Zhao didn't take the title of this book, his calligraphy is still impressive. He also writes calligraphy, seals, official seals and paintings.

This small line of regular script, vertical 3 1, horizontal 37 cm, has hidden spaces, and the book has three lyrics. Now it's in Shanghai Tong's office. The fine print is very precise, and the spirit can be seen in every stroke. The pen is tight, the strokes are heavy and light, the strokes are clean and tidy, and the structure is mostly sideways, so it fluctuates. Although it is a small work, it is a masterpiece that is very eye-catching and worth tasting.
