Library Collection Construction in Higher Vocational Colleges

This paper analyzes the reading characteristics of students in higher vocational colleges and the main problems existing in the collection construction of libraries, and puts forward some countermeasures to improve the collection construction of higher vocational colleges.

Paper Keywords: Higher Vocational College Library Collection Construction

In order to meet the needs of teaching and scientific research, the library of higher vocational colleges should not only have a certain number of books, but also ensure a certain quality. The collection construction of higher vocational college libraries should follow the principles of specialty setting, specialty teaching plan, syllabus, scientific research plan and teacher training plan, and adhere to the principle of giving priority to professional books and periodicals and taking proper care of all aspects. Since 2006, the enrollment of higher vocational education has accounted for more than half of the total enrollment of higher education, and higher vocational education has shown a rapid development trend. In 2004, there were 1.047 independent vocational colleges with 2,374,300 students and 5,956,500 students. Professional setting covers many fields of social needs. The rise of higher vocational education provides a broad space for China to speed up the training of high-tech applied talents in short supply. On June 7th, 2005, the State Council held a national conference on vocational education, and promulgated "the State Council's Decision on Vigorously Developing Vocational Education", which took vocational and technical education as the development focus when formulating the 11th Five-Year Plan.

Judging from the formation of higher vocational colleges in China, there are generally three ways to form independent higher vocational colleges at present: one is to transform the original colleges, adult colleges and key secondary schools? Upgrade? Formed; Second, higher vocational colleges established by ordinary undergraduate colleges; Third, some independent private higher vocational colleges. It is not difficult to see that the overall quality of students in higher vocational colleges is lower than that in ordinary colleges. If the library really plays its auxiliary role in teaching and achieves practical results, it must carry out library construction according to the characteristics of students. Analyzing and studying the reading characteristics of higher vocational students is helpful to formulate the development strategy of higher vocational library, determine the policy of entering Tibet, carry out targeted reader work and run the characteristics of higher vocational colleges.

First, vocational college students' reading characteristics

Through the questionnaire survey of students' reading interest in higher vocational colleges, using the reader's suggestion box, guest book and the borrowing list used by students when borrowing books, it is found that the reading of higher vocational students presents the following characteristics:

1, with strong reading interest and thirst for knowledge. Students in higher vocational colleges mainly come from three aspects: first, students from secondary vocational schools, secondary vocational schools and secondary technical schools who participate in counterpart learning; Second, students who take the general college entrance examination; Have a plenty of higher vocational colleges and secondary vocational schools run jointly? 3+2? student Compared with middle schools, they have rich extracurricular news and show high interest in reading extracurricular books.

2. The reading purpose highlights practicality. For the purpose of reading, most students choose related books according to their major or future development direction. Every day, many students come to ask about professional books or books for grading research. It is recommended to buy books on eloquence, etiquette, public relations and so on to increase employment competitiveness. This is obviously in line with the training objectives of higher vocational education. However, the proportion of leisure consultation, knowledge learning and enjoying reading pleasure is relatively low. The rate of choosing martial arts, detective and romance books is even lower.

3. read a lot. The employment prospects of higher vocational students are not optimistic, and their employment competitiveness is strong. Employment pressure forced them to dabble in books outside their major. Many science and engineering students choose books on business administration and law, and many liberal arts students choose books on computers. Prepare for the competition of employment and the work outside the major.

Second, the problems existing in the collection construction of higher vocational college libraries

The most prominent problem in the library collection construction of higher vocational colleges is that the library collection layout can not meet the increasingly rich and diverse reading characteristics and diverse reading needs of students. The reasons are mainly reflected in the following aspects.

1, the book selection method is simple. It is understood that the vast majority of ordinary higher vocational colleges are upgraded from secondary schools. Before the merger and upgrading, the middle school level was low and the scale was small. Due to the nature of middle schools, schools pay more attention to teaching, while the atmosphere for teachers and students to engage in scientific research activities and discipline construction is not strong. On the one hand, the library has low goal orientation, weak planning and systematicness, and single book selection method in the collection construction. On the other hand, after the merger of technical secondary schools and upgrading to higher vocational schools, the comprehensive quality of students has changed from technical secondary school students to junior college students, and the hierarchical structure, teaching mode and requirements of teachers have changed greatly, that is to say, the service objects, service contents and readers' needs of the library have undergone revolutionary changes. The library serves the teaching and scientific research of teachers and students, and its collection should be configured according to the requirements of running a school. Different requirements for running a school should be matched with the corresponding collection construction. Therefore, there are obvious differences in the collection construction between secondary vocational schools and higher vocational schools.

2. The book integration of merged universities is weak. Before the merger and upgrading of higher vocational colleges, it was common that all middle schools had well-run independent libraries. However, due to the low level and small number of specialties, the library mainly focuses on teaching when purchasing books, and the literature has poor disciplinary relevance. After the merger and upgrade, although the library has improved in book and literature procurement, it is still relatively independent. On the one hand, books are repeatedly wasted, resulting in economic losses; On the other hand, there will be many blank spots that no one cares about, and it is impossible to form an organic book collection system, which is a kind of self-sufficiency. Small and complete? Book collection mode.

3. The number of books is small and the pertinence is not strong. The outstanding problems existing in the collection construction of higher vocational college libraries are as follows: First, there are few collections. According to the evaluation standard of higher vocational colleges of the Ministry of Education, the library has no less than 800,000 books (including digital books). Although the libraries of some higher vocational colleges in China have made great progress after several years of construction, there is still a big gap between some colleges and the evaluation standards of higher vocational colleges of the Ministry of Education. Second, the collection of books is not targeted. Observe some middle schools? Upgrade? In higher vocational colleges, many old books and outdated middle school textbooks are still on the shelves. In some higher vocational colleges and adult colleges, due to the unclear training objectives, the collection construction is intentionally or unintentionally concentrated on a few students. College? In terms of service. Third, the construction of digital libraries is slow. In recent years, most higher vocational colleges have concentrated their funds on hardware construction, and the funds for digital construction of libraries are relatively insufficient and the management methods are relatively backward. This is not conducive to the realization of higher vocational colleges to cultivate advanced? Blue collar? And then what? Silver collar? The goal of talent.

4. The quality of employees is not high. Higher vocational colleges are mostly newly-built colleges, and teachers and students have an urgent need for libraries to serve teaching and scientific research. Librarians must have corresponding professional knowledge, a solid theoretical foundation of library information, and the ability to screen and process information materials, otherwise, the function of the library will be affected. At present, libraries in higher vocational colleges have few professionals, low academic qualifications and low quality.

Third, improve the way of collection construction in higher vocational colleges

1, change the concept of book collection. With the deepening of college reform, higher vocational colleges are facing construction pressure from all sides. In order to make the college scale and upgrade, the library as a hardware index must be paid attention to. Traditional views reflect the characteristics of collection and collection, while modern library is an open system, which is closely related to the development and progress of society. It not only has the function of preserving human cultural heritage, but also shoulders the function of transmitting information and developing intelligence. Therefore, it is not enough to borrow books. But also directly participate in the development and utilization of knowledge products.

2. Optimize the collection structure and form the collection characteristics. Collection structure is the core of collection construction. Book collection system is an important link in book collection construction. The collection construction can not be limited to the collection structure and layout of books and documents, but more importantly, it is necessary to construct the collection structure of books and documents from the perspective of utilization and form its own characteristics, which requires the construction of a complete collection system. Because the library of higher vocational colleges is still in its infancy, it mainly focuses on teaching services and pays little attention to scientific research and discipline construction, which has great limitations; Moreover, most of them do not pay much attention to the construction of book collection system, so it is difficult to form a complete book collection system, and the problem of unreasonable book collection structure is more prominent. The author thinks that we should optimize the collection structure and gradually form our own collection characteristics according to the requirements of our own teaching, scientific research and discipline construction. Specifically, we should do a good job in the following aspects: First, determine the key books. Taking key disciplines and characteristic majors as the core of collection, highlighting key points and professional cooperation as a supplement, it is guaranteed from policies, systems and funds. The second is to adjust the collection structure, adjust the original collection structure, and change the collection structure from simply serving teaching to serving teaching, scientific research and discipline construction. The third is to build characteristic collections. If a library does not have a special collection, it is difficult to attract readers to use the real collection, so it is difficult to improve the utilization rate of literature. Libraries in higher vocational colleges should be based on discipline construction and professional advantages, in line with? Less but better? The idea of creating your own characteristic collection.
