The Institute of Oriental and African Studies (University of London) is a part of the famous University of London, and it is the earliest college in Britain to offer pre-university courses (1985). SOAS was founded in 19 16, and obtained the royal charter. 1938 was renamed the Institute of Asian and African Studies.
It is said that the School of Asian and African Studies of University of London is unique. It is the only higher education institution in Britain specializing in Asia, Africa, the Near East and the Middle East, and the largest of its kind in the world. About 3,200 students from more than 100 countries are studying in Asian-African College, and another 1000 students are studying distance education courses provided by SOAS all over the world.
In the evaluation of teaching quality and scientific research level of 200 1, the research work of Asian-African College is among the best in British universities, and 10 of 15 department got the highest score of 5 points and 5*. In the field of oriental and African studies, SOAS scientists and educators are struggling at the forefront of research work. The school library is an international resource center for Asian and African scholars.
SOAS also owns two famous art galleries. Brunei Art Museum was built in 1995 and generously donated by Sultans Of Brunei. One of the museums displays or reflects works from Asia and Africa. Percival David China Art Foundation owns about 65,438+0,700 pieces of China ceramics, and has a library with books about China's art and culture.

SOAS College is a center established in Europe, specializing in the study of culture, art and communication between the East and Africa. The college has five departments, namely, art, law, music (ethnomusicology), geography, economy and political science, and 13 departments. They are: Indian studies and modern language and literature in South Asia; Southeast Asian and island languages and cultures; Modern and Middle Eastern languages and cultures; African languages and cultures; Phonetics and linguistics; History; Law; Anthropology and sociology; Economics; Political science; Geography; Art and archaeology. 6 regional research centers: South Asia Studies; Southeast Asian studies; Near and Middle East Studies; African studies; Institute of Contemporary China; Japan Research Center; Korea research center.
