pre-Qin period
1, cross the city. In 472 BC, Gou Jian, King of Yue, ordered Fan Li to build a city outside the Zhonghua Gate in Nanjing today, which was called "Yuecheng" in history.
2. Jinling City. In 333 BC, Xiong Shang of Chu Weiwang wanted to use the natural moat of the Yangtze River as a barrier to plot the world, so he built a city on the steep riverside "stone" and set up Jinling City. "Jiankangzhi" in the Tang Dynasty recorded that "Jinling City stands on the mountain".
3. Moring. After Qin Shihuang unified the six countries, Moling County was established. Moling County has always been the political, economic and cultural center of the south of the Yangtze River. It was not until the Three Kingdoms that Sun Quan moved his center to Jinling. Therefore, there is a saying that "Moling comes first, then Jinling".
Qin and Han dynasties, Wei and Jin dynasties
1, Stone Town. In 2 12 AD, Sun Quan of the State of Wu moved to Moling, the capital, and built a city in the original site of Stone Mountain Jinling City, renamed Stone City. Stone Town guards the Yangtze River and is a battleground for military strategists. Broadly speaking, Stone Town is another name for Nanjing today. In a narrow sense, it refers to Shishan Town in the west of the old city of Nanjing.
2. Jianye. In 2 12, Sun Quan renamed Moling as Jianye, meaning "the great cause of establishing the emperor".
3. Jianye In the Western Jin Dynasty, Sima Yan changed Jianye back to Moling. By 282, with the Qinhuai River as the boundary, there is Moling in the south and Jianye in the north, which means Yecheng, the land where Sima made his fortune, which means that he never forgets his homeland.
4. Health. In 3 13 AD, during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the name of the Emperor of Jin State was Sima Ye, so as to avoid the emperor's taboo, it was renamed Jiankang.
During the Sui and Tang Dynasties, baixia district now belonged to Jiangning County of Jiangzhou, and later Jiangzhou was changed to Danyang County. After the Tang Dynasty, the names of prefectures and counties changed more frequently.
Song Yuan Ming Qing Dynasty
1 During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, Yang Long, the king of Wu, played the role of Jiansheng Zhoucheng, and was later divided into Shangyuan and Jiangning with Qinhuai River as the boundary. In Song Dynasty, Nanjing was successively called Shengzhou, jiangning house and Jiankang.
2. Jiankang House was upgraded to Jiankang Road in Yuan Dynasty, and in 1329, Kanglu was rebuilt to Qing Ji Road (the name recorded in historical materials should not be Road, but the road in the modern sense was named after the widening of the National Government Road). Qing Ji Road was the place of governance at that time.
3. 1356, Zhu Yuanzhang captured Qing Ji and changed Qing Ji Road to Yingtianfu.
4. 1853, Nanjing, the capital of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, was called Tianjing. The following year, Tianwangfu was built.
Republic of China period
1, in the first year of the Republic of China (1 912) 65438+1October1,Nanjing was the capital of the Republic of China, and it was first called Nanjing House, and Shangyuan County was abandoned. In the second year of the Republic of China, Nanjing was abolished, and Nanjing was called Jiangning County.
2. 1927, the government of the Republic of China made Nanjing its capital and called it the capital. In June, Nanjing set up a special city, renamed Nanjing, and was directly led by the National Government.
After the founding of New China, the name of Nanjing has been used ever since.
