The Creative Background of Shan Hai Jing

Shan Hai Jing was first seen in Sima Qian's Biography of Shi Ji Da Wan: "I dare not say anything about the monsters in Yu Benji and Shan Hai Jing." This shows that Sima Qian has read Shan Hai Jing. Before Sima Qian, the title of Shan Hai Jing should have existed long ago, but the number of volumes was unknown. Before that, although there was no title of Shan Hai Jing, the literature of Shan Hai Jing should have existed long ago.

Some scholars speculate that Qin Shihuang, Lv Buwei, his disciples and Qu Yuan should all have read Shan Hai Jing. The reason is that Qin Shihuang believed in seeking immortality overseas out of his trust in ancient books; For the latter two, Shan Hai Jing in Lu's Spring and Autumn Annals has many contents, and Tian Wen also has many contents similar to Shan Hai Jing. Qu Yuan's other articles also have the same description as Shan Hai Jing.

Zhuang Zhou may have read The Classic of Mountains and Seas. Because of the rich imagination in Zhuangzi, he should benefit from the content of The Classic of Mountains and Seas.
