Book format concept

Format refers to the size of a book. The size of the whole book is expressed by the number of sheets cut on the whole paper. Cut a whole piece of paper into 16 small pages with the same width, called 16 pages, cut into 32 small pages called 32 pages, and so on. Because the specifications of the whole base paper are different, the sizes of the small pages cut out are also different. Cut 787 mm× 1092 mm paper into 16 pages, which are called small 16 pages or 16 pages. Cut 850 mm× 1 168 mm paper into 16 pages called 16 pages. And so on.

Book format specification

(1) large format: 12 format. Suitable for printing thick books or periodicals with many charts and pages.

(2) Medium books: all books opened by 16 -32. This is a general format, which has a wide range of applications, and all kinds of books can be printed.

(3) Small edition: suitable for manuals, reference books, popular books or short texts, such as 46, 60, 50, 44, 40, etc.

Usually the common books are below 16, because only books below 16 can be convenient for readers to read. In practical work, due to the different technical conditions of each printing house, it is often slightly larger and smaller. In practice, due to the different binding conditions of paper and printing, the same layout will be designed into different shapes, such as square layout, positive layout, horizontal layout and so on. The same format has different shapes due to different papers, some are long and some are square.

Book format type

(1) Political theory books such as Marxist-Leninist works are serious and solemn, with large space. It's usually read on the table, and the format is very large, usually 32 pages.

(2) College textbooks generally adopt large format. I used to use 16 format, which was too big. Now change it to 32 large format.

(3) For the convenience of readers, literary books often adopt a 32-page format. Poetry and prose collections have smaller formats, such as No.42 and No.36.

(4) Encyclopedias and dictionaries in tool books are thick and profound, generally in large format, such as 16. A small dictionary, handbook, etc. Can be used in smaller formats, such as 64 format.

(5) The typesetting and printing of printed albums should reasonably arrange works of different sizes and make full use of paper, so approximate square formats are commonly used, such as 6 format, 12 format, 20 format and 24 format. If it is a traditional Chinese painting, we should consider its unique narrow width and adopt a rectangular format.

(6) Use a larger layout for books with more pages, otherwise there will be too many pages and it will be difficult to bind.
