Extended data
ISSN is managed by the International ISDS Center in Paris, France. Since 1975, a world-wide standard bibliographic database of continuous publications has been established, and 650,000 periodicals published in nearly 200 countries and regions (including those that have stopped publishing) have been registered, making it the most authoritative periodical bibliographic data network system in the world.
China established ISSN China Sub-center (located in Beijing Library) on 1985, which is responsible for the distribution and management of ISSN number of China periodicals. Nearly 5,000 China periodicals have been assigned ISSN numbers and entered the international ISSN data system.
ISSN is usually printed on the cover or copyright page, and ISBN can be distributed to domestic and foreign publications at the same time. The ISBN is managed by the ISBN Management Bureau of the National Prussian Cultural Heritage Library in Berlin, Germany. One of the main tasks of this institution is to assign regional numbers to lower-level regional institutions.
Generally, regional institutions are located in the National Library, but not in some big countries and regions.
For example, the regional organization in Britain is Whitaker Company, which was the British National ISBN Center before ISBN came out, and it can be said that it was the pioneer of ISBN; The regional center of the United States is Burke Company.
China's regional institutions are located in the Press and Publication Administration. The main work of the regional organization is to accept the application of the publishing house and grant the second paragraph number, that is, the code of the publishing house. The third number and check code are decided by the publishing house. Publications issued with quasi-serial numbers are legal publications.
