Yuxi Normal University is a provincial full-time undergraduate college. 1978 was established with the approval of Yunnan province, and 1983 was transformed into Yuxi Normal University with the approval of Yunnan Provincial People's Government.

1992 was renamed Yuxi Normal University with the approval of the former State Education Commission. In 2000, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Yuxi Normal University was established on the basis of the merger of Yuxi Normal University, Yuxi Normal University and Yuxi Adult Education and Training Center (educational resources). In 2007, the school passed the evaluation of undergraduate teaching level by the Ministry of Education, passed the inspection and evaluation of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education in 20 17, and became a demonstration college for cultivating applied undergraduate talents in Yunnan Province in 20 19.

The school covers an area of 104 1 mu, and the total assets of teaching and research instruments and equipment are142.63 million yuan. The library has 1049300 volumes of paper books, 365438 kinds of paper periodicals and 30 specialized databases, including 870800 kinds of e-books and 65438 kinds of electronic periodicals. The school has 14 secondary colleges, 8 research institutions and 4 teaching auxiliary institutions.
