Early books:
Human social life needs to transmit information and exchange ideas. Before writing appeared, people mainly communicated through language. However, language is limited by time and space, so the ancients used tying ropes, wood carving and simple graphic symbols to help them remember.
However, only words can transcend time and space, accurately record language and express ideas. In the Yin Dynasty and the early Western Zhou Dynasty (from13rd century BC to10th century BC), people recorded the divination of Oracle Bone Inscriptions and important historical events in words, resulting in the formation of Oracle Bone Inscriptions, bronze inscriptions and stone drum characters. These are archival documents and materials, which are called early books.

Books refer to works that are compiled or created, written, engraved and printed on certain materials for the purpose of spreading knowledge, introducing experiences, expounding ideas and propagating opinions. Taking this as a standard, formal books appeared in the late Spring and Autumn Period.
According to legend, Confucius' deletion of the Six Classics and Bian Wei's Three Masterpieces shows that there are already books written on bamboo slips, and there are also books written on silk fabrics, which are called "silk books" or "plain books". "Silk books" and "Mozi" say that "books are made of bamboo and silk and carved on stones", which is a high summary of the book-making materials before the appearance of paper books.
Cai Lun in the Eastern Han Dynasty summarized the papermaking technology since the Western Han Dynasty, and improved and popularized it. In the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the government officially ordered the writing of books on paper. The appearance of paper has led to great changes in book-making materials, which is of epoch-making significance in the history of books in China.
