The school's predecessor was Xiangyang Electromechanical Engineering School founded by 1955. On April 20 10, Xiangyang Automobile Vocational and Technical College was established on the basis of the former Xiangyang Radio and TV University, Xiangyang Electromechanical Engineering School and Xiangyang Industrial School.
In April 2023, the official website of the school showed that the planned area of the new campus of the school was 800 mu, and 645 mu had been built, with a total construction area of 250,000 square meters and school assets of 65.438 billion yuan.
