What is a database?
If we want to borrow a copy of Yongle Dadian from Nanjing Library, we just need to sit in front of the computer, click on the website connected to Nanjing Library by China Education and Research Network, open the ancient books bibliography database, and enter the title: Sikuquanshu. After the system responds, it will display the "Sikuquanshu" collected by the library, and we can further go through the borrowing procedures.

A database can usually be compared to a warehouse that stores a large amount of data. In scientific terms, a database is a collection of data stored on a computer storage device. For example, we standardize a book's title, author's name, publishing unit, publication year and main content. According to the recording rules, the bibliographic data of this book can be obtained. For this reason, many bibliographic data are stored on computer disks in an orderly way for a long time so that users can enjoy them, and these bibliographic data later become bibliographic databases. The establishment, application and maintenance of the database are all completed by the database management system software, which is managed and controlled by people in a unified way. As long as the bibliographic database is established on the computer of the library, the computer can be used for query and retrieval.

Database is one of the fastest growing important branches of computer science and technology. As long as the database technology is combined with the technology of other disciplines, various databases can be designed as needed. For example, combining database technology with library and information science can make a bibliographic database; Deductive database is a combination of database technology and artificial intelligence. Multimedia database is a combination of database technology and multimedia technology. Database has the ability to effectively store and access a large amount of information, so it has become the foundation and core of large-scale information systems, and its related application fields have also expanded from traditional business and transaction processing to various fields of science and technology, economy, military and social life, playing an increasingly important role.
