How do publishing house editors review manuscripts?
So what is the main purpose of reading the manuscript? I'm afraid few people think about this problem systematically. In recent years, a group of undergraduate and graduate students majoring in publishing in colleges and universities come to our editorial department for internship every year. Their main task is to help us read the manuscript. On the first day of work, every intern who comes to our editorial department, whether undergraduate or master, I have to ask the same question. What is the main purpose of reading the manuscript? The general answer is to look at typos and sick sentences. I think this answer is incomplete, inaccurate and unscientific. So, for many years, I have been thinking about a question, what is the main purpose of reading the manuscript? According to my many years of experience in dealing with manuscripts, after systematic thinking, I summarized the review of manuscripts as the key "five readings". Write today in order to communicate with colleagues. "Fifth Reading" mainly refers to the following five aspects: First, is the political orientation of the manuscript correct? The so-called political orientation of reading a manuscript is right or wrong, that is, when reading a manuscript, a responsible editor must ensure that the manuscript does not contain any contents that are seriously inaccurate and have political or political orientation problems, or other contents prohibited by China laws and regulations. Ensure that the author has no infringement on books and pictures, owns 100% of the copyright of books and pictures, or owns 100% of the right to use when entrusted by others. There are actually two problems here, political orientation and copyright. On these two issues, the responsible editor can make a difference. As far as the first question is concerned, a responsible editor should have such professional sensitivity and be able to quickly judge which contents of the manuscript are seriously inaccurate. What content is political or politically oriented? What contents are prohibited by Chinese laws and regulations? If it is difficult to judge clearly for a while, we should also find relevant laws and regulations to identify them in time, or consult relevant experts for guidance. As far as the second question is concerned, a responsible editor is not helpless, but can also make a difference and nip in the bud. On the one hand, you can search for relevant content on the internet and filter it; On the other hand, it can be discussed in the editorial department or in a wider scope, and everyone's strength and wisdom can be concentrated to distinguish the authenticity of the manuscript. Second, is the thinking logic of reading the manuscript smooth? The so-called fluent thinking logic of reading a manuscript mainly refers to the ideological logic, structural logic and expressive logic of the manuscript. When reading a manuscript, a responsible editor must help the author to clarify the ideological logic, structural logic and expressive logic of the manuscript, so that the manuscript can be connected from top to bottom in one go. As far as ideological logic is concerned, what the author of a manuscript advocates and what he does not advocate; What to support and what to oppose. It is necessary to have a clear-cut stand and a firm attitude, but also to be consistent and run through the whole text, and not to swing from side to side. As far as structural logic is concerned, the structure of a manuscript should be complete, rigorous, scientific and impeccable and stand the test of time. As far as expression logic is concerned, the author's expression of the full text in a manuscript should be consistent, that is, the full text should be the consistent expression of the author in writing a book, and the expression should not be different according to the source of the manuscript, sometimes like Zhang San's and sometimes like Li Si's. The other layer of expression logic means that the arrangement at the whole level should also be consistent. For example, the first part of a manuscript has written an excessive discourse, so every part should be written, not some, but some not, thus causing inconsistency in expression. Third, the basic framework of reading the manuscript is incomplete? The so-called incomplete basic framework for reading a manuscript mainly means that no matter what kind of manuscript, there must be a basic framework. To read a manuscript, we must first judge whether a basic framework has been established. There is no need to help the author establish the basic framework; Secondly, it is necessary to clarify the basic framework of the author's manuscript, that is, to clarify the author's writing ideas; Thirdly, it is necessary to judge whether this framework is scientific and find out the problems existing in this framework. The so-called basic framework, I think as far as fictional novels are concerned, refers to the arrangement of basic story plots and the shaping of characters; As far as popular science and various teaching materials are concerned, it refers to the construction and discussion of the basic theoretical system; Even the collected works should have a basic compiling idea, which is the basic framework mentioned in this paper. The basic framework of manuscript reading is incomplete, which is the key to test an editor's level. In particular, local party clubs and comprehensive clubs such as Hunan People's Publishing House often have to edit and publish the collected works of some leading cadres. Most of these anthologies don't have an editing idea, which requires our responsible editors to determine a basic editing idea according to the contents of the anthologies, that is, the basic framework of manuscript editing. If this basic framework is reasonable and scientific, it will be recognized and praised by the author and win the trust and support of the author. The fourth is to see whether the graphic correspondence of the manuscript is accurate. The so-called graphic correspondence in manuscript reading mainly refers to the correspondence of graphic content and graphic position. With the development of publishing industry and the change of people's reading habits, there are more and more illustrated books. When reading an illustrated manuscript, it is an important content to see whether the pictures and texts correspond correctly. General problems are mainly manifested in two aspects: first, the content does not correspond. That is, the text content is inconsistent with the picture content. The text says so, the picture says so, and the text and the picture content are irrelevant. Second, the position does not correspond. That is, the positions of words and pictures are not corresponding, far apart, or even spread across pages, which is not conducive to readers' reading. These problems should be solved one by one when reading the manuscript. The fifth is to see whether the editorial norms of the manuscript are correct. The so-called correct reading and editing standards mainly mean that the manuscript must conform to a series of regulations in the Book Publishing Management Manual compiled by the Book Publishing Management Department of the General Administration of Press and Publication and published by Zhejiang Education Publishing House. The book publishing management manual contains three parts: first, publishing management; The second is copyright protection; The third is the national standard. Among them, the most important is the regulations on the publication of various books in the first publication management and the whole content of the third national standard. In addition, it should also include layout, font size, and standard words and sentences. In my opinion, only by doing the above five points can we read the manuscript carefully, which is what we usually call one-time reading. However, in our usual practical work, the so-called reading manuscripts generally refers to the fifth point of the above five aspects, whether the editing norms of manuscripts are correct. And it is only a part of the fifth point, mainly about the standardization of words. To put it bluntly, I mainly look at other words (there are no typos because of computer input) and sick sentences. This deviates from the true meaning of reading the manuscript. The main reasons for this phenomenon are as follows: first, the laws and regulations of the publishing administration department and the rules and regulations of the publishing house do not clearly stipulate how an editor should review manuscripts. Although there is a requirement for the three-trial system, there is no detailed standard for how to carry out the three-trial system. Second, at present, none of the editing textbooks tells how to read manuscripts, which makes the undergraduate and graduate students of publishing major not know how to read manuscripts. Third, the book quality spot checks of publishing houses and publishing management administrative departments are out of shape. In the five aspects mentioned in this article, only other words are often found in spot checks. As long as the other words do not exceed 1/10000, the quality of the book is qualified. As for editing norms such as political orientation, thinking logic, basic framework and graphic correspondence, which are more important than differences, they are not included in the spot check. This leads to the lack of institutional guarantee for the quality of peer review. The phrase "reading manuscripts" used by publishing house editors is simple to say and sounds simpler, but it is very difficult to do well. This paper attempts to do some discussion and research on this cliche in order to consult editors and teachers engaged in publishing teaching in colleges and universities.
