A brief answer to the version system of A Dream of Red Mansions.
A: The Dream of Red Mansions version has two systems:

The first is the "fat book" system, which was popular in 80 manuscripts from the 19th year (1754) to the 56th year (179 1) and was named after it. There are more than a dozen books in this system, among which the most important one is: (1) The Book of Studies of Classics (formerly known as Chen Geng Book). This book is seventy-eight Re-comments on the Stone in Peking University Library. The title of the cover is "Story of Stone", and some titles bet on "Chen Geng Autumn Edition". When Hu Shi wrote an inscription for this book on 1933, he named it Geng Chen Ben. (2) Zhiyi Ben (formerly known as Bazaar Ben). This is the manuscript of Qing dynasty, entitled "Re-evaluation of Stone by Zhi Yanzhai". This manuscript is also called "Bazaar Edition" because there is an inscription on the cover "Bazaar Qiu Dong Final Edition". ③ Zhi (formerly known as Chen Jiaben). This copy was found in Shanxi on 1953 and is now in the National Library of China. Because the frontispiece has "Dream Preface", which is called "Dream Preface" or "Dream Book" for short. At the end of the preface, there is the word "waking up in the middle of the month", indicating the time of the preface. This book was officially nominated as A Dream of Red Mansions. (4) Fat mask. This is a copy of The Story of the Stone, which was collected by the Mongolian Palace in Qing Dynasty. From 1960 to 196 1, it was found in China Bookstore of Liulichang, and now it is in the National Library of China.

The other is the "lesson book" system, that is, the 120 back-printed book system. In the fifty-sixth year of Qianlong (179 1), Cheng Weiyuan first printed with movable type, which was called A Dream of Red Mansions in Xiu Xiang (usually called Cheng Jiaben). The following year, it was revised again and printed in movable type (usually called Cheng Yiben), and various later 120 copies were mostly based on the above two books. At this point, the era of copying A Dream of Red Mansions is over. The one hundred and twenty printed editions were supplemented by Gao E after the eighties edition, so they are also called "high continuation edition" or "high edition".
