Shen Yu 1980 began to engage in amateur literary creation. 1984, Shen's first collection of animal novels, The Seventh Hunting Dog, was published, with a first print run of 654.38+10,000 copies, and won the first national prize for outstanding works of children's literature. In the following two awards, Shen won the prize again by the chance encounter of The Hunter and the Red Milk Sheep, and became the winner of this important children's literature prize "three consecutive championships".

In Taiwan Province, Shen's animal novels have also been warmly welcomed by young readers. Twenty-three animal novels have been reprinted many times, which is the highest reprint rate among mainland children's literature works. Among them, Dream of the Wolf King, which won the fourth "Yang Calling Children's Literature Award" in Taiwan Province Province, was reprinted more than 20 times. Therefore, Shen was nicknamed "the king of China's animal novels".
