How to cultivate children's interest in reading? What is "reading"?
Author: Hong Lan

I have a student who was sent to a primary school in a mountainous area to do alternative service. He told me that every morning, before dawn, primary school students would go over mountains and mountains to school and directly knock on the glass window of his dormitory to wake him up and open the door of the library. Because they want to go in and study. We also know from experience that people naturally like reading, but the current situation is that many children don't like reading. This requires reflection. What is wrong with our education?

Reading should be "pleasant" reading, and children can read if they want to. Therefore, make-up reading must start from students' interests and be convincing, and talk about other things first.

In fact, it is not so difficult to induce children to be interested in reading. It is not necessary to read books that adults are not interested in, such as The Princess and the Prince. We have always said not to underestimate children's abilities. Sometimes reading challenging books can stimulate children's interest and imagination.

Once, a student came to me "in a rage" and said that his eldest sister-in-law went to the hospital to give birth to a child a few days ago. I have hired a substitute teacher. Something happened on the way, so I called him at home to cover it until I found someone. He was very nervous and asked me how to be the "King of Lynx". At that time, I happened to have a copy of "Insect Detective" by Savage Publishing House, so I told him, "You graduated from the Department of Zoology, so you can explain your knowledge in simple terms, and the teaching must be vivid in order to catch the children's attention. Here are several detective stories, the protagonists are insects, taking specimens, telling stories and teaching children insect ecology. " The next day, he came to me excitedly and said, "Yesterday was a complete success. The children refused to leave when they heard that their parents had come to pick them up.

It turned out that he read the first article in the book, "Butterflies Kill Moths": a butterfly was accused of killing an insect of Trichoptera, and many witnesses saw the moth fall to the ground and die motionless. After the police arrived, Butterfly and witnesses were taken for questioning. The butterfly insisted that it didn't hit the moth, but when it saw the moth falling vertically, it stopped to see if it was sick, but because it didn't respond when it was pushed or shaken, it flew away to do its own thing.

The story developed strangely, because the body disappeared later. The police also questioned the insects near the body. Every kind of insect has its own living habits. The sensory reconnaissance mechanism used in daytime life is different from that used in nighttime life. The testimony of one witness leads to the testimony of another witness. Finally, the truth came out-this moth immediately landed vertically on the ground of the forest because it "saw" the bat approaching, and the bat used sonar to catch its prey, and the method of guessing was also developed. Once discovered, it was edited.

The story is tortuous and interesting, and introduces the ecology of many insects, so the children refused to go home after listening to it, and agreed to tell the second story the next day: the story of the disappearance of the dung towel room. I think he's excited to borrow scarab specimens everywhere. He told primary school students a junior high school book with no pictures and many words. Very successful, the children learned a lot. He also found what he had learned useful and both sides were happy. Therefore, as long as you can speak, it doesn't matter if the content is deep, but children learn a lot.

A parent came to the podium after my speech and asked me, "Why does Singapore require parents to read to their children when they are 18 months old?" He doesn't understand. Isn't it a waste of reading? " Many parents have the same puzzled expression on their faces. In fact, as long as children are educated correctly, they will not be in vain.

Put a child in a normal environment, no one will teach him to talk, he will talk; If you put a child in a normal environment and no one teaches him to read, he won't read. Neuroscientists believe that there is no reading center in the brain. That is, many areas leave their original jobs when they have tasks, so they will work together to complete reading tasks. So if they practice for a long time, they will master it. When they can give orders, all "units" will come to their positions to help. Therefore, it is not easy to read. It must be done as soon as possible, the sooner the better. If you miss the opportunity, it is not easy to form a state of joint efforts of all parts, and children will have reading difficulties.

Why do children like to listen to the same story and read the same book all the time? Researchers believe that this is because they have not mastered this new information and have not understood it, so they will read it repeatedly and build more neural connections from each reading, thus generating more background knowledge and understanding. Once the child understands the story, like the last piece of puzzle, he can put the book down and choose another book to read. Therefore, this phenomenon of reading a book repeatedly occurs in young children, which is rare in older children.

Parents must not be impatient. Every reading will increase the connection of neural circuits in the child's brain, just like a circle. Head to tail, it's a complete success, as easy as blowing off dust. Therefore, after a video game is broken, the child will lose interest in it, but before it is broken, he will try hard, which is related to opioid receptors in the brain.

It is found that boys and girls have different preferences in choosing books. Girls like story novels, while boys like knowledge that is not stories that can be obtained in the real world, such as biographies of historical figures and how to make cars. So boys and girls can read different books when introducing themselves. Teachers might as well start with historical novels with real suspense, such as Biography of Bao Gong and Elvis Presley, which are loved by adults and children. Read an article to the students first. When reading the best part, put down the book and let the students read it by themselves. Or introduce some unjust imprisonment in the history of China, for example, and Chinese cabbage, Dou Ying, fifteen customs, etc. And explain what "leapfrog appeal" means, why nail house should be set up, and why the aggrieved person should sleep in the nail house case to get a new trial. When telling stories, teachers can teach what human nature is by the way, and why human criminal means have been refurbished for thousands of years, but criminal intentions will not change.

The ancients said "persuasive" is reasonable. Reading is a habit and needs to be induced. Wouldn't it be more rewarding if you could read with your child, inspire him and teach him the way of thinking? It is absolutely not difficult to induce children to read as long as they have the heart.
