1931June 13 I was born in Washington, USA, and my parents immigrated from Russia (a small village called shields near the Polish border) shortly after the First World War. My parents opened a grocery store at the intersection of First Street and Sidon Street in downtown Washington. My home is in the apartment above the grocery store. When I was a child, Washington was a city with a distinct ethnic distribution. Our home is in a poor black community, and it may be dangerous to wander in the street. Therefore, I have to amuse myself by reading. I venture to borrow books and return them to the central library by bike twice a week.
No one has given me any advice or guidance in this regard: my parents are illiterate, never study, and they have exhausted all their energy for food and clothing. I read all kinds of books and look at the arrangement of library shelves: the big biography shelf in the middle first caught my attention, and it took me a whole year to read it all. But I found another world in the novel that made me more satisfied. It is a source of inspiration and wisdom. No wonder I have developed an idea since I was a child: writing novels is the best thing, and I still hold this idea.
