20 18 Publishing Qualification Examination "Basic Theory and Practice" Knowledge Points: Book Form
Section 2 Forms of Books and Periodicals
Books are the earliest publications, and periodicals, as an independent media, have a history of more than 300 years. They still occupy an important position in the publication market. Compared with other types of publications, these two types of publications have obvious and stable characteristics in form, structure and ways of bearing spiritual and cultural contents, and the * * * between them is far greater than the difference. Therefore, the introduction of this chapter is generally to integrate books and periodicals, but not to distinguish between them.
Party, will be specified.
The so-called "book form" refers to the external form of books and periodicals, mainly including format and binding style. For junior technicians of publishing major, being familiar with the forms of books and periodicals can not only help people communicate with each other accurately in daily business communication, but also lay a foundation for active innovation and development in publishing practice.
In China, some relatively fixed technical terms are used to describe the forms of books and periodicals, such as "book heart", "book mouth", "book top", "book root" and "page". Although literally only refers to "books", it actually covers periodicals.
First, the main part of the appearance of books and periodicals
Except for the pictures in bulk, most of the books or periodicals we usually see are bound into volumes, which are cubic in shape and have a certain height, width and thickness. These three dimensions and six faces formed by pairwise combination respectively constitute the main parts of the appearance of books and periodicals. In the publishing industry, technical terms referring to these parts include front cover, back cover, spine, spine and root (see Figure 3- 1).
Cover, also known as "cover" or "seal one", is located in front of books and periodicals. The size of the cover depends on the height and width of the book.
The back cover, also known as "bottom cover" or "seal four", is located on the back of books and periodicals, corresponding to the cover. The bottom seal has the same size as the top seal.
The spine is also located at the page binding of books and periodicals, connecting the front cover and the back cover. The size of spine depends on the height and thickness of books and periodicals.
The book opening is also called "external incision". It is the side of the document page in books and periodicals, and its size depends on the height and thickness of books and periodicals. The folio of a book corresponds to the spine, where all the pages are completely cut, and books and periodicals can be opened freely in the folio.
The top of the book is also called "upper incision" or "book head". It is located at the top of books and periodicals, and its main part is also the side of document pages in books and periodicals, but its size depends on the width and thickness of books and periodicals.
The book root, also known as "undercut", is located at the lowest end of books and periodicals, corresponding to the book top, and has basically the same characteristics as the book top.
Second, the left copy and the right copy
Due to the different arrangement directions of characters in the text, books and periodicals have two forms: left-handed edition and right-handed edition.
The spine of the left-handed book is on the left, the mouth of the book is on the right, and it opens to the left when reading; Right-handed pages, on the other hand, have the spine on the right, the mouth on the left and open to the right when reading (see Figure 3-2).
The left-hand edition is suitable for horizontal books and periodicals read from top to bottom and left to right (such as most Chinese books and periodicals, English and Russian books and periodicals) or vertical books and periodicals read from left to right and top to bottom (such as Mongolian, Manchu and Xibo books and periodicals). After the left page is opened, the right page is all single-code pages (that is, odd-numbered pages), and the left page is all double-code pages (that is, even-numbered pages).
The right-hand edition is suitable for vertical books and periodicals read from right to left (such as some Chinese books and periodicals and Japanese books and periodicals), or horizontal books and periodicals read from top to bottom and from right to left (such as Arabic, Uighur, Kazakh, Kirgiz and other books and periodicals). After opening the right page, the left page is all single code plane, and the right page is all double code plane.
In order to facilitate readers' understanding, this book introduces the contents of book layout design based on the horizontal layout of the left-handed version. If the right page or vertical orientation is involved, it will be specified.
