The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is the only symbol of books, and it is an international number specially designed for identifying books and other documents. ISO promulgated the ISBN international standard in 1972, and set up the international ISBN center in the Prussian Library in West Berlin, which is the management institution for implementing the standard. Publications using ISBN coding system include: books, pamphlets, microforms, braille prints, etc.
