The Journey to the West's earliest edition today is "A New Carved Big Seal, Like an Official Plate, Journey to the West" written by Jinling Shidetang in the 20th year of Wanli in Ming Dynasty, with no author's name. Lu Xun, Dong Zuobin and others finally determined Wu Cheng'en's original work according to the records of Huai 'an Fu Zhi and Wu Cheng'en Journey to the West.

The novel mainly tells the story of the Monkey King's birth, following Bodhi's father to become a monk and make trouble in Heaven, meeting Tang Priest, Pig Bajie, Friar Sand and White Horse Dragon, going west to learn Buddhist scriptures, going through difficulties and obstacles, exorcising demons, going through eighty-one difficulties, finally arriving in the Western Heaven to see the Buddha, and finally realizing the dream of the five saints.
