Suzhou Institute of Science and Technology was formed by the merger of Suzhou Institute of Urban Construction and Environmental Protection and Suzhou Railway Teachers College in September, 20001. It is an ordinary university funded by the central and local governments and mainly managed by Jiangsu Province. The school focuses on undergraduate education and actively develops postgraduate education. On September 20 10/5, Suzhou Institute of Science and Technology was renamed Suzhou University of Science and Technology and included in the list of universities visited by experts from the Ministry of Education.

There are 44 undergraduate majors such as architecture, among which urban planning is a characteristic major in Jiangsu Province, and three majors such as environmental engineering, civil engineering and history are the construction points of characteristic majors in Jiangsu Province. It has 10 master's degree programs in urban planning and design, environmental engineering, structural engineering, world history, municipal engineering, disaster prevention and mitigation engineering and protection engineering, ethics, special history, basic mathematics and applied chemistry.
