The first impression is that NYU has no campus in the traditional sense. What do you mean? Students who have seen The Magician's Apprentice or Gossip Girl may wonder why students run around the street all day, unlike in school. NYU is like this. Compared with other schools, its buildings are scattered. Its main buildings are distributed around Washington Square Park, and some buildings are beside the famous Central Park, further south of Manhattan and Brooklyn. But this is not a disadvantage. On the contrary, integrating NYU with the most prosperous Manhattan in new york is part of the school's open style. The black part is the school building, and the entity can be identified by the purple flag inserted on the building.
In addition, the culture of new york is very diverse. There are residents of various ethnic groups and many international students in the school. However, there are differences between schools, but according to an American brother who finished his Ph.D., most of the graduate schools (master's and doctor's degrees) of Computer College are students from China and India. This statement was verified by what I learned when I applied, and the computer of new york University was no exception. Other colleges are slightly different. But we should know one fact: China has the largest proportion of international students in the United States, and India is the second. Therefore, among American students, China and Indian students are very common.
The school's public facilities are perfect, and you can generally think of them. In NYU's building, there are basically public ***Wi-Fi signals for surfing the Internet. Just provide your student ID and password. Especially the library should make good use of it. Among them, bost Library is the largest of nine libraries in NYU and one of the largest public libraries in the United States. Just across the street from the south side of Washington Square Park, you only need to provide a student ID card to enter. You can study by yourself, consult materials, borrow books, and discuss with your classmates in the group study room. And it is open 24 hours a day, even if you want to spend the night in it (but there is no sleeping facility, but it won't drive you away). You can take your notebook with you. There are many power outlets, which are convenient to use. Even if you don't have or forget your notebook, you can borrow a PC or Mac from the library for free.
Step 2 transport
The public transportation in new york is very developed, it is convenient to live on campus, and renting a house by subway is not very troublesome. Of course, if you rent a house, you must spend some time choosing the best place.
The accommodation fees for undergraduates, master students and doctoral students are different, but the overall situation is that living on campus is more expensive than renting a house. Here is the dormitory charge of 20 12 school (note that you can't live in the dormitory during holidays, and the school can arrange other accommodation, but it will also pay extra. Therefore, the dormitory fee is 4 months per semester and 8 months per academic year).
If you live on campus, the school bus service will be provided in the dormitory school farther away, and it will only take more than ten minutes to get closer. If you rent a house, you usually share it with your classmates or others. You can search NYU's freshman QQ group before going to school and contact your classmates to rent a house together. The closer the school is, the more expensive it is. After all, the school is in a good location. I provide an intuitive feeling: each person shares 500-600 dollars a month and takes the subway to Washington Square Park for 35-50 minutes; Conditions in New Jersey, Jersey City and Newport are better. Usually take the subway to Washington Square Park for 25-35 minutes. It costs 850- 1300 dollars per person per month, depending on whether you live in a living room or a bedroom, a big bedroom or a small bedroom.
When I first came here, I felt that the subway system in new york was very complicated. Not only are there many lines, but the operation mode is also slightly different from that in China. At present, domestic subways, including Beijing, do not run 24 hours, while new york does. But there is a problem with 24-hour operation. When some lines need maintenance, there will be line changes. But this kind of thing is usually arranged in non-working hours. I have just arrived in new york, and I am not familiar with the route. I suggest going to the kiosk of the subway station and asking the staff for a free route map of new york subway, or going to the operator's website http://mta.info/ to learn about the new york subway in advance. If you want to be more convenient, buy a smart phone (domestic frequency band is ok, but pay attention to support the communication frequency of American operators, you can search online) and go to AT & amp; T or other operators make a prepaid card and buy a traffic packet (at & amp; T's prepaid card is 25 per month, 1GB), using Google Maps.
3. Daily shopping and food and clothes
Among the leasing strategies provided by NYU·CSSA, there are several convenient places. For example, Amherst is one of the famous Chinese communities in new york. It takes about 40-50 minutes to go to school. There are several large Chinese supermarkets there, and there is no problem in daily shopping.
Don't worry too much about buying clothes. There are some good shops near the school. If there are some large supermarket chains like Target near the place where you stay, there are also all kinds of clothes for sale. As long as it is not a very high-end brand name, it will not be more expensive than domestic ones, and the quality is also very good. Even famous brands are cheaper than domestic prices. Newport is close to Target, and there is a physical store next to Best Buy, so it is convenient to buy electronic products.
Food depends on the place. If you eat out, if it is a Chinese community, there is no problem; If not, the taste will be different, even a lot of unheard-of food, it is more troublesome to tell you the name if you don't know what it is. If you cook it yourself, just go to the supermarket to buy delicious food, and don't worry about the taste. However, it should be reminded that it takes time to do it yourself. If there is not enough time, it is suggested to consider the possibility of eating out.
Here are two specific suggestions:
(1) You don't have to worry about eating any preferred location provided in NYU CSSA's leasing strategy.
(2) What about eating out (such as at school)? If you are not worried about the price, you will want to eat better. The price is $ 10-20. If a waiter serves you (not fast food), remember to tip the waiter 15%-20% after dinner. Cheap ones can go to the dining area on the first floor of Bobst Library, the largest library in the school. You can go to the mobile kiosk (Muslim cart) in the school street to buy fast food, and the price is more affordable. For example, a box of chicken rice and a can of drinks costs 5 dollars, and then you can eat it at any public table. There are many such places.
