A Historical Review of Mathematical Communication
Secondary Mathematics Monthly is the title of the previous issue 1933- 1940. This paper briefly introduces the publication and collection of this journal. The publication of China Journal of Mathematics was about a century later than that of similar western magazines. According to the verified historical data, Journal of Mathematics, founded by Huang Qingcheng in Wenzhou on 1897, was the earliest mathematical journal in China, with the issue of 12, and was closed the following year (1898). More than 30 years later, before 1933, 10 mathematical journals were published one after another, with at least one issue and at most 15 issues, which were generally closed for two or three issues. Up to now, there are more than 100 kinds of mathematics periodicals in China, the oldest of which is Mathematics Newsletter, which was suspended twice and reissued twice. The monthly "Intermediate Mathematics" (hereinafter referred to as the monthly) begins with the first issue 1933 1. The 10 issue published in the first four years is a volume (ending in August and September or July and August), each issue is 48-54 pages, with rich contents, such as catalogues, books and periodicals, etc. 1937 After the publication of the fourth issue of Volume V, the Japanese invaded China, and a large area of land in eastern and central China was rapidly lost, forcing universities in these areas to move westward. Wuhan University, on which Monthly magazine is based, is no exception, moving westward to Leshan, Sichuan. In this extremely turbulent environment, the fifth issue of Volume 5 of Monthly was postponed to 1937 65438+ February. The editor of the fifth issue said, "This issue should have been published long ago, because the printing time of the last issue was too long, and it was only published shortly before the summer vacation. After the original plan was postponed, they were thrown out one after another. Unexpectedly, the Lugouqiao Incident occurred in July, which was followed by an all-round war of resistance ... Now the situation is tense, and it is uncertain whether the next issue can continue to be published. However, our colleagues vowed to do their best to maintain the only mathematical journal in China, and it should still be published as scheduled to comfort readers' expectations. "

During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression period, the monthly magazine was marked as a "special issue" and published irregularly. In the 1980s, the author visited university libraries in more than ten provinces and cities. The latest issue was the fifth special issue of Secondary Mathematics Monthly, which was printed in Chengdu in June 1940+065438+ 10. The publication itself reflected the extremely difficult conditions at that time, and the publisher was really trying his best to maintain the publication of the monthly magazine, and its spirit was admirable! As far as seeing is believing, the monthly magazine published five volumes and forty-five issues in the first five years, and then the special issue published five issues, totaling fifty issues.

In the first half of last century, China, a mathematical journal, was able to publish 45 issues in five years, which was unprecedented at that time. Therefore, Monthly is well-known and influential, and all major and medium-sized libraries order collections. However, due to the constant turmoil and changes in the domestic situation, there are many vacancies in various libraries, especially the fifth issue of Volume V and the special issue. It was not until the late 1980s that the author found the book in the Sichuan Provincial Library.

At present, Professor Wei Gengren (1901-1991) has seen a relatively complete preservation of this monthly magazine. He is an older generation of mathematics educators in China. He was the first chairman of the Mathematics Teaching Research Association of China Education Association, the chairman of the Shaanxi Mathematics Society, and the old head of the Mathematics Department of Shaanxi Normal University. In 1930s, Lao Wei was a math teacher in the middle school attached to Beijing Normal University. Since the publication of the first issue of the monthly magazine, for more than four years, he has gone to the designated bookstore to buy on time. After the July 7th Incident, the Sino-Japanese War broke out, and he fled to Xi 'an with his wife and children. On the way, he did not forget to buy the fourth issue of the fifth volume until the publication news was interrupted. During the war, more than 40 issues of "Monthly" fled from Beijing to Xi 'an with him and moved to southern Shaanxi. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, he accompanied him back to Xi 'an and Beijing, and was transferred to Xi 'an with 1958. For decades, under the condition that the traffic conditions are far worse than now, his family has moved many times and lost a lot of furniture, supplies and books again and again, but only a few sets of mathematical periodicals have always accompanied him. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Lao Wei compiled the History of Mathematics Education in Middle Schools in China, and several sets of periodicals became the main reference of his works, from which he absorbed a lot of historical materials and information. He also wrote articles on several early mathematical journals in China. When the investigation found that he collected many issues of monthly magazine, he regarded it as a treasure, asked the author to bind it into five hardcover volumes on his behalf, and often introduced the history and characteristics of this periodical to students, which he couldn't put down.

1991At the end of May, hundreds of representatives from the national mathematics education circle gathered in Shaanxi Normal University to celebrate Professor Wei Gengren's 90th birthday. Soon after, he suddenly said to the author, "I am thinking about how to deal with this journal and let it play its best role in the future!" " "Later, he repeatedly urged his family to go outside the school to get back the borrowed third book. Because Lao Wei has been in good health, the younger generation has not paid close attention to this matter. The author went back to school on a business trip, didn't meet, suddenly learned that he was seriously ill, and gave up without leaving a word! A few years later, my son moved to clean up the relics, and specially handed over this set of "Monthly Magazine" collected by his ancestors to the author for management. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the publication of your magazine. With the consent of Lao Wei's children, they will be responsible for giving this monthly magazine, which has been treasured by Lao Wei for more than half a century, to the editorial department of the original magazine for permanent preservation and development, in order to show their comfort!

Note: The third volume of Middle School Mathematics Monthly, which was finally lent by Lao Wei, has not been lost so far! It's a pity that a set of basically complete publications, which have been treasured for more than half a century, was finally lost! In the future, anyone who sees the third volume of this volume of Middle School Mathematics Monthly hopes to contact the editorial department of this magazine, Mathematics Newsletter Now, in order to preserve cultural relics and fulfill the wish of a deceased ancestor! thank you
