Can peony be grafted?
There are many propagation methods of peony, such as branching, grafting and sowing, but most of them are branching and grafting, and sowing methods are mostly used to cultivate new varieties.
Grafting method of peony
Grafting propagation of peony can be divided into two types according to the different rootstocks used. One is wild peony; One is to use peony roots. The commonly used grafting methods of peony mainly include embedding method, abdominal grafting method and bud grafting method.
1, grafting method
When the root of Paeonia lactiflora is used as the rootstock, because the root of Paeonia lactiflora is soft, it will not have a hard heart, and it is easy to graft, and the root is thick and short. In this case, the survival rate of grafting will be higher and the growth will be more vigorous after successful grafting. Grafting with peony roots will be more difficult, but the plant life will be longer after successful grafting.
2. Abdominal transplantation
This grafting method is to graft many inferior peony branches into excellent varieties with different colors. Pay attention to irrigation after peony grafting, but in rainy season, do a good job of drainage and keep the temperature suitable for peony growth, so as to make the survival rate of grafted peony higher.
3. Bud grafting
This method is usually carried out from May to July every year, and it is best to choose sunny days for grafting. Skin sticking method and bud changing method can be used. The bud sticking method is to cut a square mouth on the rootstock, then trim the prepared buds to be grafted into the same shape and install them in the cut square mouth, and tie them tightly with a rope. The bud-changing method is to completely cut off the axillary buds on the rootstock and keep the bud embryo, and then cut off the axillary buds of the branches to be grafted in the same way, quickly put them in the gap of the rootstock and tie them tightly with a rope. After grafting is completed, attention should be paid to watering, loosening soil and fertilizing to promote the healing of grafting interface.
