Xuanwu District, located in the middle of Nanjing, is one of the eight districts in the main urban area of Nanjing, an important scientific research, cultural and commercial center in China, a modern service industry base in East China, the seat of Nanjing Municipal Party Committee, municipal government and several provincial and municipal organs, and the seat of the heads of military organs such as the Eastern Theater and the Eastern Theater Air Force.
Xuanwu District was founded in the 22nd year of the Republic of China (1933), and originated in the first district of the Republic of China. Xuanwu Lake, the largest royal garden lake in China, was named Xuanwu Lake District. Xuanwu District is the seat of the palaces of Dongwu, Dongjin, Southern Song, Qi, Liang and Chen, the Forbidden City in Nanjing in Ming Dynasty, the Tianwangfu in Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and the Presidential Palace in the Republic of China.
