The long history of the school can be traced back to the Guangdong Agricultural Experimental Field and its affiliated agricultural workshops founded by 1909. 1952, during the adjustment of colleges and universities in China, the Agricultural College of Sun Yat-sen University and Lingnan University merged with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Pests and Diseases of Guangxi University to form South China Agricultural College, which belongs to the Ministry of Agriculture. President Mao Zedong wrote the name of the school in his own handwriting.
1984, renamed South China Agricultural University. In 2000, the state deepened the reform of the management system of colleges and universities, and the schools were placed under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province by the Ministry of Agriculture.

The school has a complete range of disciplines, including 99 undergraduate majors, 12 first-class disciplines authorized by doctoral degrees, 1 first-class disciplines authorized by doctoral degrees, 28 first-class disciplines authorized by master degrees, and 15 first-class disciplines authorized by master degrees.
Agricultural pest control, crop genetics and breeding, agricultural economic management, fruit tree science and preventive veterinary medicine are five national key disciplines, agricultural mechanization engineering is one national key discipline (cultivation) 1, and 24 provincial and ministerial key disciplines (including five key disciplines of the Ministry of Agriculture, three first-class key disciplines of Guangdong Province 13, four second-class key disciplines of Guangdong Province and two key disciplines of the State Forestry Administration).
