Shang Zhijun devoted himself to compiling the national pharmacopoeia of Tang Dynasty-the newly revised materia medica.
Shang Zhijun started the editing and proofreading of the newly revised materia medica from 1947. At first, he took Li Shizhen's Compendium of Materia Medica in Ming Dynasty as the base, and spent several years of painstaking efforts. When it was about to be completed, he realized that the materials cited by Li Shizhen were transcribed from Zheng Bencao, which was not the most original material, and there were many mistakes. So, he flatly overturned the previous draft and started from scratch. After several years of flying mosquitoes and freezing, the first draft was finally completed in 1958. When I went to Beijing for further study, I studied hard in Beijing Library and Mr. Zhao Yihuang's Rare Book of Materia Medica, and I was constantly reviewed and guided by Mr. Chen Bangxian, Mr. Fan Xingzhun and Mr. Zhao Yihuang. Finally, he accepted the suggestion of Mr. Xing Fan Zhun, and made a lot of revisions and supplements based on the thesis. The book was also included in the publishing plan of People's Health Publishing House. 1962, due to the influence of natural disasters for three years, the manuscript of Newly Revised Materia Medica was forced to dismount like many construction projects, but it was mimeographed by Wuhu Medical College in the same year with Mr. Xing Fan Zhun as the preface. At the same time, Wupu's Materia Medica, Notes on Materia Medica Classics and Newly Revised Materia Medica were mimeographed. Among them, New Materia Medica was published by Anhui Science and Technology Publishing House 198 1, and Upp Materia Medica was published by People's Health Publishing House 1987.

The compilation of New Materia Medica has had a great influence in the field of materia medica at home and abroad, just as Mr. Fan Xingzhun made a preface to the book in 1962: "We know that there are more than one person engaged in the compilation of New Materia Medica at home and abroad, but no one has come out. Today, Mr. Shang can take the lead and make the world's first national pharmacopoeia look like 1300 years ago. 198 1 journal of traditional chinese medicine's second issue commented on the Shang edition: "In the past 30 years, Shang Zhijun has completed the compilation of Newly Revised Materia Medica, especially the Newly Revised Materia Medica, which has the nature of the first pharmacopoeia in the world and can be compiled in China to make it reappear in the world.

1September, 1990, a new edition of Materia Medica was exhibited at the first China Chinese Medicine Expo held in Beijing, which was widely concerned and praised by medical experts. As the preface to Anhui Tang said, "Professor Shang Zhijun has compiled 18 kinds of herbal literature, such as Tang Xin Xiu Ben Cao, which is well-known at home and abroad."
