The history of the school can be traced back to 1893, and Zhang Zhidong, governor of Huguang, established a self-improvement school at the invitation of the Qing government. In 2000, Wuhan University merged with Wuhan University of Water Resources and Electric Power, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping and Hubei Medical University to form the new Wuhan University.
