The Three Gorges University is located in Yichang, a sub-central city of Hubei Province and the capital of hydropower. It is a comprehensive university jointly established by the Ministry of Water Resources and the Hubei Provincial People's Government, and a key construction university in Hubei Province. Approved by the Ministry of Education, the Three Gorges University was formed on June 29th, 2000 by the merger of the former Wuhan Institute of Water Resources and Electric Power (Yichang) and the former Hubei Three Gorges University.

The former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Power (Yichang) was formerly known as Gezhouba Hydropower Engineering College, which was established in 1978. It belongs to the Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Electric Power Industry and the State Power Company. On 1996, it merged with the former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Power to form a new Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Power, which became "Project 2 165438".
The school covers an area of more than 3,000 mu, with a total construction area of10.4 million square meters. The library has more than 2.9 million paper books, nearly 20,000 electronic periodicals in Chinese and foreign languages, and more than 6,543.8+0.5 million electronic books in Chinese and foreign languages. There are 30 colleges and 72 undergraduate majors, covering 9 disciplines: science, engineering, literature, medicine, economics, management, law, teaching and art.
